WE ARE GETTING A 26 YEAR OLD STUD, FOR NOTHING! WE STILL GET TO KEEP A 1st ROUND PICK. I just can't see whats wrong with that. We are not losing picks, we are gaining a stud, and still have a pick to take a lineman. seems like people think we are giving up 2nd and 3rd round picks. we still have a pick in the 1st round. not the 6th, but still the 1st round.
This point has been written here yet again, even after I remember shooting it down. This is what you get for repeating a dumb point: you sir, are a moron. We're not getting him for nothing. You do realize the difference in talent between the guys available at 6 and the guys available at 31?

Not to mention what we could get in a trade by moving down from 6 in exchange for picks. If I were a mod, I'd ban you for being retarded.

Our D line does need to be addressed, which it will, just later in the draft. The draft is deep enough we can get a quality player. There may be something in the works we do not know about yet. Yes it will cost us, yes Rocky will sit, but that is just a move that can't be ignored. That side of our D was consistantly run all over.
Please don't try to convince me that "keeping a first rounder" means a whole hell of a lot. We're dropping from 6 to 31 in this scenario, I don't care what you're calling it. Would it be much different if we dropped from 6 to 33 (the second round)???

Saying we're keeping a 1st rounder with the 31st pick is technically true. But it doesn't mean a hell of a lot. Going from 6 to 31 means we're giving up a ton of opportunity.

Well it dose mean something droping to 33 because the pick would get less money because he is not a first rounder! As for your post yes falling that far and not getting another pick seems short to me!

The difference between 31 money and 33 money is miniscule.

rocky has not even had the chance to show it on the field. let the guy develop instead of giving up on him so damn early in his career. remember we gave up a 2nd rounder just to move up and pick the guy. at least give him the chance to show it on the field, give the guy a full training camp at least. jeez, what is it w/ our coaching staff that is so damn afraid to play young players when everyone else in the nfl does it???

hey, I agree. You will alway hear me saying the same thing. I just thing Briggs is a complete stud LB. We get the guy for nothing, when franchise players cost you 2 first round picks. We get him and keep a 1st round pick. I just think its one of those deals you can not pass up, no matter what you need. Rocky is unproven, he could provide great depth with Marshall. We always say our team has no depth, this could give us some depth there. we only had 1 pick anyway. We were going to trade down and take a DL anyway, why not upgrade and still pick a DL late in the 1st round, which is what we were going to do anyway

You don't trade away a 2nd rounder to move up to take a guy in the 2nd round to be a back-up. That makes no sense what so ever. That's like trading for Drew Brees, making him your starter and telling JC to be the back-up. Too much is invested in Rocky to make him a back-up. Plus we have Marshall to play weak side. Didn't Marshall play real well filling in for lavar in 04? Don't our silly ass coaches already know this?

I know Briggs is real good. But how is he going to play in our system with a line that's not as good as the Bears? I bet his play slips if he comes here. How is he going to play after he gets a new deal? It's like we always chase other teams players. When are we ever going to draft a guy, let him grow in our system, and reward that player? All of our own guys that we draft walk out the door. It's such bullshit! This is why we never make the playoffs.

The smart thing to do is give our players new deals before they hit the market. We already let Dock walk. We should be signing Cooley to a long term deal right now. Instead of chasing some crybaby bitch who goes on ESPN/NFL Network ( and whoever else will listen to him) and says he's not playing for 7.2 million.

for now...I'm going to assume that once we acquire Briggs...we're going to trade him to move back up and pick up a second or third rounder...but just adding Briggs with no extra picks is retarded when you consider our current linebacker core. This stinks of a desperation move in the wake of Washington's injury...kind of like the Duckett trade

Just because a guy is labeled a franchise player, is he automatically worth 2 first round picks? That's what the CBA says a franchise player is worth in a trade, but that doesn't mean teams are willing to pay that.

If Lance Briggs didn't have the franchise tag, would you give this year's first rounder and next year's first rounder for him? I'd hope not. The reason? He's not worth that much, no matter what tag he has on him!

We're not coming out ahead of anything. We'd get a really good LB and a pick that can't possibly land us an impact DT. We don't need 1 good LB. We need an impact DT, a young G to groom (don't forget, we're currently planning on forcing a career-long T who is built like a T to switch to G), an athletic S to play alongside Taylor, and some would say a young DE because we're getting old at that spot.

This trade does not fit our needs, it doesn't solve our problems, and it perpetuates the players' discontent with our front office's willingness to pay outside talent rather than pay to keep their own. We need to trade the 6th pick for more picks, not Lance Briggs and a pick that can't solve our biggest need: DT.
To play devil's advocate for a second-

I like Justin Harrell as a prospect. And there's an outside chance that Alan Branch could still be around at 31. So if we could land a prospect whom we were considering at 6, and now only have to pay him No. 31 money, we'd actually come out great in this deal.

But then again, if Harrell and Branch get taken prior to 31, and we don't have an option but to take the best remaining DL prospect, then the Briggs deal has officially royaly screwed us.

If we are genuinely interested in this deal, I could only assume it was because we weren't enamored with ANY of the top prospects.

Doesn't matter what we think about the top defensive line prospects, guys. If we didn't like the guys at the top, we could trade our #6 down for more picks. We could pull a deal with Denver for their 21st pick, and get a 2nd and a 4th or something. We don't have to squander the trade value of the 6th pick for Lance Briggs.

Again, it's not about what we're getting. It's about what opportunities we're giving up here.

There is no rationalizing why this deal makes sense. Please, people stop being homers for a second and stretching yourselves to come to the defense of the great Joe Gibbs. We need a DT to stop the run (how quickly we forget Tiki gashing us in week 17). We need athleticism at safety alongside Taylor (Fox was OK, but at the end of the season, was the secondary at the level you really want it?). We need a Guard with a big body (do you trust a 6'8" Todd Wade to get low enough to clear the way for Portis around the goalline when we sorely need a TD?).

We don't need one mother effing linebacker, for God's sakes. Do you really think we're THAT good right now? That Briggs will come in and take us to the next level? We need multiple athletes. I don't want to say we're in rebuilding mode, but we're definitely still BUILDING.

The truth is the FO went for it all last season and fail big time. Trading most our picks in 07 and one in 08. There just is little chance we can make it up in one year or with one pick[6th]. It would be hard to do it trading down and the likeyhood of hitting on lets say three good players in a trade down of three picks is not good. So what is the best way to go? That is why you have a Great GM to plan away to go and not this live for today way of thinking!

I agree that we squandered picks, which bugs the hell out of me. But that's neither here nor there when discussing what's the best move to make NEXT.

I don't care what's happened already, that's history, I care what's about to happen.

The best way to go is add mutliple athletes because we have multiple holes. There is no argument otherwise.

I think there is......Lets say by some luck we do hit a great player with the six pick. I would be ok with that. What are the odds so so. But to hit three is so unlikely. Just look how long it has been for the Redskins to get three great players in one draft. A long time and they haven't been hitting lower picks at all. The best you can say is Piece and he was a free agent not drafted as well not even signed by this group in FO! You are right moving down for most team would be the move but after last year dose our FO have it in them to make one player in to three?
