Guys, may want to excuse me for being so sensitive on this subject, but just sixteen month's ago one of my dogs was viciously attacked and mutilated by by an out of control Pit bull Terrier. Vet bill was enormous, three different court appearances to recover expences for untold suffering to the animal. I share no sympathy for anyone involved in what Vick is being acused, or for anyone who condone it.

Re: Portis apparently is not a dog lover

I wonder how much thought Portis put into his response about the issue, had he thoughtfully considered the reaction his remarks were going to create, maybe he would think to reconsider. By me being an avid dog lover, I consider his remarks offensive, as well as insensitive to an aged old love affair between man and dog.

Tom Lantos, D-Calif. chairman of the congressional friends of animals caucus wrote a letter to Roger Goodell urging strong action in the event it's founded Vick is in anyway (knowingly) involved in such hideous behavior.Regardless of whether you like dogs or not, there is no place in a civilized society for this type activity.

Alot of people would rebute that animals being raised and trained to fight is inhumane What about the peolpe that were brought up on fighting? Is that humane? The point that I am trying to put across is that you cannot say that it is ok for a person to compete in a fight while it is not ok for any other animal. If they want to criminalize dog fighting, then human fighting should be just as illegal.

I do not like boxing or any other martial art, nor am I an animal lover. I just believe that what is fair, is fair across the board.
As far as the Congressman sending a letter to Roger Goodell? If he was really that serious about swift justice, he could get to the heart of this matter really easy. Get on a plane, travel to the areas of the states where dog fighting is most prevalent, and help bring these thugs to justice. Don't wait for a high profile individual to be accused so that you can make your media splash.

It is our intent to find out just how serious he is, and believe me he does not have to get on a plane to travel to Montgomery County, Md. where we had serious problems of this very nature just a short while ago. Once the legal authorities become involved (local or otherwise) where illegal activity is aledged involving NFL players, it becomes the responsibility of all those concerned to get to the bottom of the problem.

I do not believe it was the intention of anyone here to demonize Clinton Portis, I do however believe that his remarks were of a sensitive nature, and one could very easily gather from his remarks the perception he did not find Vick's association in any way reprehensible.

You logic is ridiculous and extremely off base. Daseal brought up a great rebuttal, as have others. To add...
The main difference is people CHOOSE to box or fight in UFC. The animals that are made to dogfight have no choice in the matter. What makes the whole issue of dogfighting worse is that as humans we are using an otherwise innocent and defenseless animal to suffer, be maimed and/or die simply for our amusement. To me it is sickening that people participate in this and support it. You are dead wrong on this issue!

I just watched the interview and Portis was not joking, he was dead serious. Samuels simply said he felt the media should not be pushing this so hard until Vick is actually convicted. While Portis was talking the look on Samuels' face speaks volumes (it was definitely a "Oh $@%* I can't believe he is saying this). Dogfighting is a felony in 48 states and a crime in all 50 for a reason.

It's amazing to me that you actually have to point out to some people that dogs and humans have different capacities for decision making.

Three problems here.

1. Fighting dogs can get loose and hurt or kills humans. How many times has this happened?

2. According to the police report, all of the dogs were were not being treated very well. They were not being fed. So that's f--ked up.

3. If you were Arthur Blank would you want the face of your organization involved in this?

The bottom line is many people are dog owners and look at this and simply are repulsed. And I bet many of those people are Falcon season ticket holders that help pay Mick Vick's huge salary. So CP and yourself may not think it's a big deal but the majority of the public does.

I think a lot of people are missing the point re: anti-dog fighting. And before you start in, I am not a big dog fan and I consider them the same as all domesticated animals...useful to humans, but not equivalent. Animals shouldn't be abused, but I am not going to shed a tear when they die or are killed for whatever reason.

That said, the single biggest problem with breeding and fighting dogs is not the gambling or the animal abuse (both are bad, but don't harm anyone other than the people and animals directly involved). The reason this acitivity is illegal is that you are introducing viscous, genetically manipulated killing machines in and around people. Any animal that is bred and trained to kill other animals is a direct threat to humans, particularly children.

When I was in 3rd grade I watched a 10 year old kid in my neighborhood get his face torn off by a loose german shepard that had been trained to be a fighter. You CANNOT have these animals in close proximity to people, just as you can't own a tiger, lion, wolf, or any other large predator without specialized permits. Anyone who keeps these animals should be prosecuted to the fullest extent the law allows for endangering society in general, and that include Vick for allowing it to happen on his property.

Re: Portis apparently is not a dog lover

If you want to compare humans to animals, SSG. Isn't that whole "It's X's property" the same type of bullshit people used to defend slavery? He can kill him, that's his slave.

It's ridiculous to say that this should be equated to boxing. First of all, boxers at any time can say stop, they get paid a ton of money, and have the best doctors in the world able to help them out. It's also a conscious decision to fight. These dogs are being forced to fight and often both end up dying in hideous conditions. If they find out that Vick has been a part of this (rumors of dog fighting and Vick go back to his days at Tech at least) he should be banned from the NFL.

Portis sounds like a moron in that article,Im glad O.J. wasnt a friend of his
Reporter: what do you think about O.J. ?
Portis: I'm from Laurel, Mississippi. I know a lot of back roads that got the bitches stabbed if you want to go see it."

and i dont buy the argument if you grew up with it you might think its ok,I grew up with a rascist father and I knew from an early age that it wasnt right to hate someone because of their skin color, you either know right from wrong or you dont care if its right or wrong

I wouldn't worry about what CP said, unless he himself is involved with dog fighting. Probably bored and just wants to make the papers, etc.
