They might be amazed at the depth & breadth of the love but they are aware that football teams are loved.

That seems to be what he's saying, I don't think he's saying he had no idea people loved their animals, I just don't think he realized the depth and breadth as you say:

He says it pretty clearly at the end, he says he has no interest in dogs but he knows there are people that are crazy about them.

He probably didn't understand just how crazy people are.

He's not a robot, I'm sure he knew that people loved their pets, he just didn't realize the degree to which people love them.
