I like the signing as it shores up the only glaring question mark on the O-line. I wish, however, we could have found a younger guard to trade for and had not traded our 5th rounder. A 5th rounder seems kinda high for a 34 y.o. disgruntled guard. Isn't that what Miami gave up for its new starting QB?

Pete Kendall To The Rescue
The Redskins have acquired guard Pete Kendall from the New York Jets to fill their void at left guard, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.

Kendall, who has endured a rocky relationship with Jets management in recent years, is a smart, capable veteran who can replace departed free agent Derrick Dockery. He can play all three interior positions but the Redskins have an immediate need at left guard, with tackle Todd Wade struggling to make the transition to that position, and relying on reserve Mike Pucillo in that spot in last week's preseason game.

Kendall, who turns 34 next month, had begin working with the Jets starters again in recent weeks, and over the weekend teams that inquired about his availability were told that New York planned to keep him. However, the Redskins were eager to firm up the left side of their line - quarterback Jason Campbell was nearly lost for the season due to a hit Saturday night and could miss the remainder of the preseason - and Kendall was considered the best option available.

Kendall (6-5, 292) is in his 12th year and spent the last 4 with the Jets and was a first round pick by Seattle in 1996. He has started 156 games.

Three NFL executives who scouted the Redskins over the weekend all came to the same conclusion about Washington's issues at left guard, and time was running out for Wade to make the transition. Now, with Kendall here, Wade could go back to being a reserve tackle if need be - Pro Bowl left tackle Chris Samuels has missed nearly the entire preseason with a knee injury - and Washington's depth on the line - considered a major deficiency by many scouts - is much improved.

The Redskins have been averse to trading any more 2008 draft picks - their 4th rounder is already gone from last year's acquisition of TJ Duckett - and I have not been able to nail down if they gave up a 4th or a 5th in 2009, but it's believed to be one of those two picks. They gave Kendall a $1 million raise as part of the deal as well, so he'll make $2.7 million this season. Kendall has played previously for Seattle, Arizona and New York.

Kendall is not here yet and must still pass a physical, but that looks like a mere formality at this point.

Good move by the Skins and one, frankly, they had to do because of the position they were in. Like people told me over the weekend, they were asking for trouble with the combinations they had.

I like the move, it should put an end to the experiment and speculation at the position. I have not liked what I've seen the last two weeks on the left side, this move let's me know the coaches were not impressed either. I'm sure we all were hoping the move with Wade would work out, but obviously that does not apear to be the case.

Know what I love? The Bills paying $7 million a year for Dockery vs us paying $2.7 million this year for Pete Kendall.

And they both have the same strengths: run blocking. Dock certainly has more potential because of his youth, but man, I don't see a glaring difference between Dock and Kendall at this point in their careers.

Shrewd moves by our FO. Definitely doesn't make sense to pay Dockery that much when you can get a similar LG for a third of the price (draft pick notwithstanding).

Two years from now, I think the Dockery non-signing looks even better for us. He'll be a few years older, and by then we should have acquired a top notch guard via the draft at a much lower salary.

Let's just hope we can make it through the season with Kendall and Pucillo at guard.

Though Kendall stopped short of saying that he wouldn't continue to use medications in order to be able to suit up and perform, a source with knowledge of the situation made it clear to us that Kendall would not be using any pain medication if the team didn't adjust his contract..."

As SmootSmack stated earlier, PFT may not "filter" a lot of their rumors, but this issue of potential continued "use of painkillers" caught my eye...if true of course.

Well, his contract got adjusted here in Washington. He got what he wanted, the extra $1 million added to his salary. Seems like now he should be satisfied and would be willing to take any painkillers if need be.

I think that's a crappy rumor though, and just something to fuss over. I don't think this issue will have any impact on the Washington Redskins.

If the Pete Kendall experiment doesn't work out, it won't be because of the painkiller issue. It will be because he has to pick up a new blocking scheme, get used to new teammates, or because he actually gets injured.

For the record, I think the Pete Kendall experiment will work out just fine.

So is there a possibility that Wade could play LT until Samuels comes back? I know he's not 100% himself and it matters less to me since Campbell probably won't play anyway, but it might be some improvement over Heyer. Or does Wade's failure at LG mean he is purely suited to playing the right side?

If Wade is back to being a backup tackle, then I don't see why he shouldn't do exactly that - backup an injured tackle.

BTW, assuming there isn't some poison pill aspect to the Kendall deal, his health or some other surprise, he looks like a brilliant acquisiion, if you look at him as Dockery's replacement. (As oppossed to an act of desperation) Less expensive and at least as good at the very worst. He is oldish but we can just say experienced instead.

I guess I have to give it up for the FO. They never would have gotten a deal like this in FA. I prefer the approach of putting together your team and soldiering forward regardless, but this move seems like it was too good to pass up. (I guess I have visions of Snyder getting carried away and plotting more and more trades every time someone makes a bad play in a pre-season game)

It's a nice aquisition but it seems like it will be a while for him to learn the offense.

I don't see any offensive cohesion with him until the second half of the season.

I like the add, but I don't want to be a dreamer.

Not a bad deal I suppose. He's old, but he can still hold it down for another couple of years.
