I'm pretty sure Portis played DB in HS. Also, he was recruited as a defensive player by Florida.

Portis did go both ways at Gainesville High, where I used to teach. And Steve Spurrier wanted to make him a safety, so he went to the U where he could be an HB instead of UF. Oh, the Ol' Ball Coach
