Re: Bill Cowher!!
A younger coach could provide more stability to the staff in the long term. Like the original focus of this thread, Cowher was 35 when he took over the Steelers job. However, Tomlin made sense to take over for Cowher because he was already with the team, and being molded to take over. Lane Kiffin is an easier chance to take because of his background (Son of Monte, worked under Pete Carroll at USC). Mangini as well, as he worked for Belicheck.
Dallas could have done the same thing with Jason Garrett, but decided to go with a head coach with a bit more experience, even though his track record in the NFL as a head coach wasn't very good in Wade Phillips. There is definitely arguments for both sides. If Gibbs is around next year and the team continues with success, I could see keeping the status quo. However, it will be 5 years, and depending on future success, 1 playoff year in 5 isn't very good, and would be time to rock the boat so to speak.

Re: Bill Cowher!!
Tomlin was being molded to take over the Steelers?

Re: Bill Cowher!!
Not sure what I was thinking...perhaps I was thinking Garrett...needless to say, it's been a rough morning.

Re: Bill Cowher!!
That's because we had Spurrier at the time. In hindsight it would have been better to can that experiment gone wrong and hand it over to Lewis, but as the saying goes hindsight is always 20/20.

Re: Bill Cowher!!
Marvin Lewis isn't exactly setting the world on fire in Cincinnati though. Some say it's because of the "character issues" he has on his team. But it's not likely he was sitting idly by without any input when these selections were made.

Re: Bill Cowher!!
True, I think he's taken too many chances on questionable character guys and it's hurt their locker room. And what the heck is up with their total collapse this year?

Re: Bill Cowher is worth a try
Joe Gibbs is a wonderful person and WAS a great coach. The other bigger problem is the owner, but we can not fire the owner - so ya Bill Cowher - Big Tuna - Jimmy Johnson, Satan, anyone!!!

Re: Bill Cowher!!
Midseason is an appropiate time to weigh in on the progress or decline of this team, coach and record. The team as a whole seems to lack a cohesive bond where the offense compliments the defense and establishes some decent drives to give the defense a chance to rest. I'm tired of watching the offense lose its way after a half. The coaching staff headed by Gibbs has no clue how to get the best out of the players they have at their disposal. Where is McCardell, Caldwell, and Yoder? No reason to mention the highest paid benchwarmer other than Brunell. ( Lloyd ) There is a real need for change in the philosophy of how the team's identity should be viewed. That New England game revealed to me a team that had no spine, no balls and no heart. They just took an ass-whipping like gentleman. That 's not the Gibbs lead team I grew up watching, but that's where this team is and its fixable but at what cost to the teams future ? I know it's time for a change because a team like this that makes it to the playoffs will be eliminated in the first round.

More importantly though, shouldn't this rant of yours be in the Midseason Grades thread?

Re: Bill Cowher!!
Smootsmack I find it comical that you call my assessment whether it is suitable for this thread or not a rant. If you think this isn't the right place to discuss this, fine. But save the sarcastic shit about what I said in another thread.

2. I'll be sure not to call any of your posts "rants" anymore. But as I said, see above 3. You can post your thoughts about the midseason here if you want. It just seemed like it would make more sense in the thread that actually discusses where we are at the midseason point 4. Whatever happened to that site you were going to go start a few years back. Remember, when you had enough of us?
