WTF? Impressive resume?

I have not been a Cerrato basher but only because I think I properly understood his role as being less than affective towards the onfield product. If this bump entails more onfield influence, and more importantly leads to rebuilding then I am very concerned about this.

What do we know about Vinny's influence? I really don't know what I can blame him for, other than being on the payroll. Seems he's become a scapegoat simply because he's been here.

National Championship with Lou Holtz at Notre Dame, SuperBowl ring with San Francisco, Skins. Without Vinny we don't have the depth that helped us make the playoffs this year.

I guess Washington fans need a scapegoat.

Does this mean Vinny is our official GM now?

Really? The guy has been here for 9 years, not the last 6 weeks of the season. What's their record in the last 9 years? (hint: it ain't above .500)

Impressive resume, good one lol. Vinny is Snyder's hand puppet.

This seems quite amateurish. I wouldn't exactly call the guy a stud talent evaluator. We don't have to go that far back to see some of his "exceptional" decision making. B Lloyd at $30 mil and Archuletta. In addition, I don't think anybody could really argue against the fact that we severely overpaid for ARE (as much as I love the guy). Cerrato's track record isn't exactly Patriot-like.

Re: Vinny Cerrato promoted to Executive Vice President

maybe the danny is giving in. After working w/Gibbs & giving him great responsibility & leeway in decisions (assuming he did), the Danny may realize that he has to step back & let the "football people" do their job. We tend to forget that Vinny did have a job w/a super bowl team before he came here.

I will be upset if this leads to GW not getting the job, but if long term it means a change of direction in which Snyder is willing to cede power, I think it will pay off.

Re: Vinny Cerrato promoted to Executive Vice President

Well now hang on folks.

Vinny was director of college scouting with the 49ers when they won a SB. He was Lou Holtz's top scouting guy when ND won a national championship. And if Gibbs is saying that Vinny and his crew had a major hand in developing our roster, then he had a hand in at least some of the following:

Anthony Montgomery
Kedric Golston
Reed Doughty
Chris Cooley
Rocky McIntosh
Chris Wilson
Stephon Heyer
Jason Campbell
Carlos Rogers
Sean Taylor
Laron Landry

Then the free agents, like Griffin, Washington, Springs, etcetera.

Vinny may have had a hand in Duckett, Lloyd, and Archuleta, which were crippling moves. But if Vinny's getting credit here, then you gotta give some love.

The tough thing is, I don't think any of us really know how much of the roster-building was Gibbs, and how much was Vinny.

Either way, the coaching decision is really the critical move. Vinny as Exec VP doesn't change much in my eyes. The new coach will work with Vinny to determine personnel needs. But it's the new coach that will have to deal with the players, and all the players want GW.

We can always count on Schneed as a voice of reason around here. Thanks Bro - I'm not as depressed as I was an hour ago over this news.

washingtonpost.com

"Williams does not have a close relationship with Cerrato, which is seen by some around the league as a potential factor, and Snyder met with him on four occasions, gauging their ability to coexist as well as going over football issues.

What is going on in the world? Since when did the coach have to co-exist with the front-office? Coaches and front-office guys are supposed to bump heads so that all ideas are brought to the table. And who gives a s**t what Cerrato thinks. Is he more important to this organization than a coach who has consistently lead the defense? Hope not.

Re: Vinny Cerrato promoted to Executive Vice President

I'm no math wiz, but I can put two and two together. Let's recap:

-Snyder loves Cerrato.
-Cerrato doesn't get along with Gregg Williams.
-Fassel was Vinny and Danny's #1 choice in '04 before Gibbs expressed interest in returning.
-Williams has had 4 meetings with Vinny/Danny and not been offered the job.
-Fassel has now been interviewed twice.
-Vinny just got promoted to head of all things football related for the Skins.

I smell an imminent head coaching hire, and it ain't GW.

My point exactly. As I posted earlier, we don't know Vinny's real influence in decisions. Vinny does have a solid resume & in recent years we have picked up some good players in the late rounds of the draft. Plus, it's been fashionable to bash Snyder for meddling, but at the same time do we just bash Vinny because he continues to get paid while coaches come & go?

Good post.

Just for the sake of throwing it out there, what if Vinny played a bigger role than Gibbs in the recent personnel success stories?

And I do agree with your final point. He's already been working in a similar capacity. This is mostly a change in title.

Just heard on 980 that there was some rift between GW and Cerrato.
