Calais will probably drop to the second round, so I don't see why we should use a first rounder on him, we could pick up a WR or Olinemen instead.

Re: (updated title): Make Your Day One Redskins Draft Selections (Rounds 1-2)

All right I'm willing to compromise on the corner position. If Mike Jenkins falls to us I wouldn't mind taking him. The guy has experience playing safety and is considered the second best corner in the draft. Character is obviously an issue, otherwise he wouldn't drop this far, but is obstructing an officer without violence really that big of an issue? Especially considering the string of violence we've seen among other NFL players. I would have to look into a little more, but as of now I have no problem with the character concerns.

I'm starting to believe though more and more that the Redskins first three picks will be a G, CB, and WR as the positions mentioned are relatively deep in the first round, with corner obviously being the deepest in terms of top teir prospects. And I only say relatively deep because there are a lot of guys we could take in the first three rounds.

Obviously this draft could go many different ways.

1st - Mike Jenkins
2nd - Jordy Nelson
3rd - Robert Felton (Reminds me a lot of Dockery) or Mike McGlynn (the most versatile OL prospect in the entire draft)

1st - Brandon Albert
2nd - Jordy Nelson
3rd - Charles Godfrey

1st - Devin Thomas or Limas Sweed
2nd - Chilo Rachel/Carl Nicks or Tracy Porter
3rd - Charles Godfrey or Roy Schuening/Mike McGlynn/Robert Felton

Kiper can't make up his mind. Last week he had Talib going 21st to us, then on Monday I was watching NFL live on the treadmill at the gym and he had Talib going 7th to NE. How does a guy move up 14 spots in a week?? Now he has us taking Devin Thomas from Mich St. Whatever Mel. Oh, and he also has Brandon Albert skyrocketing up to 5th overall to the Chiefs.

Re: (updated title): Make Your Day One Redskins Draft Selections (Rounds 1-2)

Over the last few weeks, I had wanted to Redskins to get one of the top recievers over 6'3" with 4.4 speed in the first round. But, if they could get 6'6" James Hardy with 4.46 speed in the second round, then Calais Campbell in the first round makes sense. Then, I expect the Redskins should try and use the possible compensatory pick in the second round some say they may get to go after a safety or defensive tackle.

1st round pick - Calais Campbell / DE / 6'8" 280 pounds
2nd round pick - James Hardy / WR / 6'6" 215 pounds
2nd round pick (compensatory pick) - Safety or defensive tackle

Ok, so the Redskins are expected to get a compensatory in the Third round and the seventh round for Derrick Dockery and Kenny Wright. Still, that gives us 8 draft picks, which is a nice haul compared to recent drafts.

Dirtbag359's 5,034th Mock Draft

1st - Phillip Merling - DE - Clemson - Solid prospect, with the ability to play DT and DE. Reminds some scouts of Trevor Pryce, and if that is any indication then chances are he'll be able to develop into a pretty good pass rusher while still being productive against the run. I know I'm a hypocrite

2nd - Jordy Nelson - WR - Kansas State - I know most would consider this a reach but it stuns me how a guy with his production at a school that isn't Texas Tech falls to the 3rd round. Great Senior season, impressive week at the senior bowl, hard worker, tough, durable excellent character.

His weaknesses are a lack of a second gear which is puzzling since he was reported to have run a 4.4 40 and even if thats not true 4.5 isn't bad for a reciever with his size. Apparently he also needs to improve his technique as a blocker. Have yet to hear that he was a product of a system at Kansas State.

3rd - Mike McGlynn - G - Pitt - Best versatile O-Line prospect durable (Very important for a team like ours), and is highly regarded as a run blocker, which will be key considering Zorn's 1,800 yards for Clinton prediction

3rd comp - DT - DeMario Pressley - Would prefer Dre Moore, but he's long gone at this point. Pressley is raw and the type of guy that the coaching staff probably believes they can turn around with the proper teaching.

5th - Marcus Griffin - FS - Texas - "Excellent tackler...Does a nice job against the run...Tough and strong...Active and aggressive ...Productive...Has a lot of special teams potential...Always around the action...Very smart...Hard worker...Great bloodlines...Excellent program pedigree."

Plus if the front office is serious about Doughty then I believe it's prudent to look for a FS since Landry essentially serves as a backup SS.

6th - Dennis Dixon - QB - Oregon - Most productive college QB available at this point in the draft. I assume he ran a WCO in college given that he played at Oregon. And since the Front office insist on getting a college passer then one of the picks from the 3rd comp till this pick will probably be a QB.

7th - Joey Haynos - TE - Maryland - Huge local product who had decent production last year.

7th Comp - Andrew Crummy - G - Maryland - Solid Guard prospect that has been slown down by injuries.

7th Comp - Alvin Bowen - OLB - Iowa State - One of the most productive linebackers in College over the past two years. A little undersized but should at least be able to find a spot on special teams.

Re: (updated title): Make Your Day One Redskins Draft Selections (Rounds 1-2)

my ideal draft would be
1. derrick harvey DE (not gholston or long, but still good)
2. trevor laws (DT with 100 tackles last season)
3. charles godfrey (CB)
3. josh barrett (SS (6'2" 223 4.34 w/ good production))
5. jeremy zuttah (OT)
6. rudolph hardie (DE)
7. mario urrutia (6'6" WR, decent numbers)
7. matt spanos (C)
7. brandon coutu (K)

if we got dexter jackson (speed WR/returner) or a guard in the comp 3rd spot, that'd be cool too, or possibly tracy porter at CB in the 2nd... we're going to lose out on a position though (WR/CB/OG). I also really like zbikowski as a 3rd round SS.

Re: (updated title): Make Your Day One Redskins Draft Selections (Rounds 1-2)

What would any think about going after an O-linemen? Everything I have read and heard is that they think Brandon Albert may be available. I love Randy and Pete but lets face it, at somepoint in the near future we are going to need to start looking for their replacements. If we can bring in a young O-lineman and teach him for a year or two just think how dangerous that could be?

If he is not available then I would have to say a DE, possibly CB. Those are my choices for the 1st round. I really like Devin Thomas, and he should be available in later rounds. And if we really covet him, I wouldn't mind making some later round trades to move up and aquire him.

Thats my thought on everything.

devin thomas may go in the 1st.

albert is generally well liked here, and if harvey, cromartie, etc are gone, i'd be cool with that.

Right now theres a lot of different ways for us to go. If the Redskins are intent on taking a D-Lineman first then they'll probably be looking at Merling (DE Clemson), Harvey (DE Florida), Balmer (DT UNC), Campbell (DE Miami), and Groves (DE/LB Auburn)

The wild card here is Groves. From what I understand Groves spent last year at OLB and right now our depth at OLB is questionable. Washington is getting older and behind Blades theres not much else. Plus they'll have to face the fact that Rocky might be out of the league in a few years due to possible injuries. Groves is Auburn's all time sack leader, and could be what I would call a rich man's Chris Wilson and a poor mans Vernon Gholston. He would also serve as an insurance policy for Carter.

Eventually down the line he could start at OLB for Washington and Blades could move back to his college position at MLB when Fletcher calls it quits. However in his first year as a Redskin it would be likely that he would see action on 3rd down and special teams.

My guess is if the Vikings take Merling and the Front Office and Coaching staff become scared off by Balmer and Campbell's bust factor, and they don't want to use a high pick on a Guard, even if it's someone of Alberts quality, and they can't trade back, then Groves might be the pick (holy run on sentence Batman).

The other scenarios include getting Merling, which recent reports of Blache getting a D-Lineman early suggest. The 2nd round is full of undersized ends with character issues, and apparently the Skin's aren't willing to use a 1st round pick on a reciever so if the Redskins are looking for a DE/DT hybrid then Merling would probably be the guy. And for safe measure they could get their 3 technique (DT) with Dre Moore (DT Maryland) in the second or DeMario Pressley (DT NC State) with their comp pick in the 3rd.

Then theres the possiblity that they could go for a 3 technique like Balmer in the first. In which case theres a truckload of DE's available from the late 3rd though the 5th round that produced well in college. If you want you can check out the day 2 picks thread where I listed the late round DE's.

Personally I don't know what they would do if they got Albert. I still picture the team making a run at Jordy in the second but thats just a guess, and as some of you know Ive been wrong on several occasions. Though according to Bram's recent blog post the Skins will use one of their first 4 picks on a reciever and if it's not on one of the first round guys then the only guy left that I see the Skins taking is Jordy. Of course theres also the possibility that a guy like Marcus Smith could get a look. Who knows maybe the Skins would take a chance on a guy like Paul Hubbard.

However if the team does decide to go offense with the first two picks then it's possible that both 3rd round picks would bring in a DT and a DE. Of course the Redskins could also look at a CB like Tracey Porter in the second.

Right now the guys that I see getting the most consideration with the 21st pick are:

- Phillip Merling - DE/DT - Clemson
- Branden Albert - G - Virginia
- Kentwaan Balmer - DT UNC
- Kenny Phillips - S - Miami
- Mike Jenkins - CB/S - USF

I think we should draft the best player available, whether WR, DE, DT, LB, CB, or OL, just pick the best player that is available.

If Kenny Phillips is the best player available with guys like Merling and Albert off the board. However next years safety class by rule of thumb will probably be a lot deeper, considering how weak this class is. Florida State and Missouri are also sporting possible first round picks in the Sean Taylor mold, though none of them will be nearly as talented.

Still Reed actually played as well as Landry did at SS after Landry moved to FS. Someone actually went through the trouble of putting there stats side by side of when they played SS and the numbers for Reed and Landry were nearly identical. I'm not saying that Reed is as good as Landry, as I predict that Landry will one day be at the same level as Troy Polamalu, but if Reed can play like a rookie Landry then I'm all for it.

Right now I honestly see the Merling/Nelson/McGlynn/Pressley route as being the most likely draft day scenario.
