Re: Time To Be A GM: Your 1st Round Pick Is...
I'm not really high on Sweed. I'm a TX fan, but I think Early Doucet is better. Mario Urittia (sp?) from louisville is around 6'6" and runs close to a 4.4 (high) forty, so he'd be a pretty decent prospect. I know he's had attitude problems, though. I think that's going to push him into the second or third round, but he's got all the physical gifts to make a great vertical threat...
I also think that we could pick up Darius Raynaud in a later round. He's not really all that high up and he's a great slot receiver. Also he was a returner, and wasn't bad at that either...

Re: Time To Be A GM: Your 1st Round Pick Is...
I liked the Talib bandwagon better when I was the only person on it here.
So I will allow others to drive it now and make a push for-no, not Antoine Cason (though I do like him)-Reggie Smith out of Oklahoma Smith played both strong safety and cornerback in college. I believe he's projected as a CB in the NFL but I think he's got the versatility to do both in the pros. So as of February 16th, I'll say with the 21st pick the Redskins select Reggie Smith

Re: (updated title): Make Your Day One Redskins Draft Predictions (Rounds 1-2)
This would be my best case senerio.
1st round-DE Phillip Merling DE Clemson 6'5" 280lbs 4.75 2005 Tackles-22 TFL-4 Sacks-2 2006 Tackles-46 TFL-10 Sacks-3 2007 Tackles-78 TFL-17 Sacks-7 This guy is an absolute monster. Besides Chris Long there is not another DE in the draft as complete as Merling. He has a non-stop motor that gets to the QB but is also very tough against the run unlike some of the other DE's being discussed (Harvey,Gholston,Groves). He has been improving every year at Clemson and looks to have big time pro potential. I think he would be a great complement to Carter. Other option: Calais Campbell- Huge prospect with potential to blow up but also looks like he has some potential to be a bust, I would take my chances though. 2nd round-CB Tracy Porter CB Indiana 5'11" 185lbs 4.4 2005 Tackles-48 PBU-6 INT-3 2006 Tackles-59 PBU-8 INT-4 2007 Tackles-83 PBU-4 INT-6 With the concern of Rogers health and Springs age CB needs to be addressed early. Porter is a tough man to man cover corner that locked WR's down all year in the Big 10. He followed his season up with a stellar Senior Bowl. It is estimated he runs a 4.4 but look for him to blaze the competition at the combine with a sub 4.4. The great thing about Porter is he is ready to play now and could be a major problem as a punt or kick returner, especially if Rock leaves. Think of Porter as this years Richard Marshall.... Other option: Antoine Cason- I think he will be gone by this point but I don't look for him to run a blazing 40 which may drop him a bit. Still a ballhawking CB with great return ability. Has all the intangibles you look for in a CB. 3rd Round-WR or O-line Adrian Arrington WR Michigan 6'3" 195lbs 4.55 2006 544yrds 8TDs 2007 882yrds 8TDs Averaged over 13 yards per catch the past two years. Good size and great hands. Potential to be the great red zone/possession WR we need. May be able to pick him up later in the draft depending on how he runs at the combine. Potential to be a big time steal. Other option: Devin Thomas WR Michigan St- I would definatly take Thomas over Arrington but he will most likely be gone by this spot. Thomas is a major threat in the return game and at 6'2" 215 plays MUCH bigger, very fast and strong. Keenan Burton WR Kentucky- Very productive WR with good size and great speed. May be able to help in the kick return game. 43.5 inch vert would make him a great asset in the red zone If we go O-Line....... Anthony Collins OT Kansas- Looks like a young poor man's Samuels. Good size at 6'5" 310. Big time sleeper in this draft. Great in pass protection. Outland finalist this year as a JR. Huge potential that could make things a little more comfortable if Jansen or Samuels would go down. Also grooms a starter for the future. Other option: Oniel Cousins OT/OG UTEP- Versitility makes Cousins a good fit. Could bulk up at 6'4" 305lbs but very athletic and could be a great pulling guard because of his quickness. 2nd Day Possibilities Mario Urrutia WR Louisville- Huge WR 6'6" that could be a late round steal if can be motivated. Kellen Davis TE Michigan St- Very athletic and good blocker. Barry Richardson OT Clemson- Monster (6'7" 330), being slept on because of inconsistency but has great ability. Heath Benedict OT/OG Newberry- Versitle, great run blocker Roy Schuening OG Oregon St.-4 year starter, good size (6'4" 317), plays smart Nick Watkins OLB Clemson- very productive Wesley Woodyard OLB Kentucky- undersized but all over the field J Leman ILB Illinois- non stop player, think Zach Thomas, going to be a huge steal Trae Williams CB South Florida- over shadowed by Jenkins but a very good CB Chevis Jackson CB LSU- Not a blazer but could be a good nickle, could be a great safety Tyrell Johnson S Arkansas St- very productive small school prospect, good size and speed. __________________

Re: (updated title): Make Your Day One Redskins Draft Selections (Rounds 1-2)
Versatile Long leads impressive group of defensive ends
By Todd McShayScouts Inc. (Archive) Updated: February 18, 2008 The 2008 NFL draft should feature at least eight defensive linemen selected in the first round. The most likely candidates include DEs Chris Long, Vernon Gholston, Phillip Merling, Derrick Harvey and Calais Campbell, and DTs Glenn Dorsey, Sedrick Ellis and Kentwan Balmer. Long, Dorsey and Ellis rank among the six elite prospects in this year's class. Long earned the highest grade of the 2008 senior prospects I studied on film last summer, and his game was even more refined this past fall. He is versatile enough to play end in a three- or four-man front, and some teams think his best fit in the NFL could be at linebacker. Dorsey and Ellis have somewhat similar styles; Dorsey spent most of his time working as a three-technique at LSU, while Ellis did most of his damage at nose tackle. Regardless, both display the first-step quickness, explosive power and closing burst to disrupt in the NFL. The remaining five projected first-rounders have a wide variety of backgrounds and styles. Gholston is an undersized edge rusher who might fit best as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme. Balmer played tackle at UNC but might fit best as a 3-4 end in the NFL. Merling and Campbell are unusually big 4-3 ends coming out of the college ranks, and depending on the scheme, could play inside and/or outside at the next level. Finally, Harvey has the frame and speed to play a more traditional weakside end in a four-man front. There are far more quality ends than tackles to choose from in this year's crop of defensive linemen, and the official combine list confirmed that feeling. Of the 52 defensive linemen invited to Indianapolis, 35 are listed as college defensive ends. This deep group can be broken into three different parts. First, there are traditional ends that fit best in a 4-3 scheme. Some quality examples expected to be available between Rounds 2 and 5 include Lawrence Jackson, Darrell Robertson, Christopher Ellis and Jeremy Thompson. Second, there is a group of bigger ends who project better as inside players in a three-man front. Kendall Langford, Jason Jones and Johnny Dingle fit that mold and will be available after the first round. The third group is best classified as rush-linebacker types. These are typically end/outside linebacker tweeners who lack the size to consistently stack at the line of scrimmage but are blessed with enough pass-rushing burst and athleticism to play a more versatile role, either as a full-time starter at outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme or as a sub-package edge rusher. Some second-tier examples will include Quentin Groves, Clifford Avril, Titus Brown, Jameel McClain and Jeremy Geathers. As for the tackles, there's a noticeable drop-off in talent after Dorsey, Ellis and Balmer. In fact, it wouldn't be surprising if Pat Sims is the only one to come off the board in Round 2. Sims came on strong as a junior (4.5 sacks and 15 QB hurries) and should test well enough to solidify a spot in the first couple of rounds. Defensive tackles available on Day 2 should be viewed as potential situational contributors. There will be several undersized three-technique types capable of occasionally disrupting the opponent's backfield. The best of the rest include Trevor Laws, Letroy Guion, DeMario Pressley, Andre Fluellen and Carlton Powell. Then there are space-eaters like Marcus Harrison, Red Bryant, Frank Okam and Athyba Rubin, who will fit best in two-gap schemes at the next level. Finally, there are a handful of small-school defensive linemen vying for spots in the late rounds. In my opinion, the three with the biggest upsides are Langford (Hampton), DE/OLB Curtis Johnson (Clark Atlanta) and DT Kurt Hout (Ferris State).

Re: (updated title): Make Your Day One Redskins Draft Selections (Rounds 1-2)
Interesting to see someone mention that Carlos Rogers has lived up to expectations. It makes me wonder if the disdain for Carlos Rogers has to do more with us passing up Shawn Meriman than Rogers actual performance.
Also found these Hog Heaven | MVN - Most Valuable Network » Blog Archive » Carlos Rogers: “X” Factor, Revisited Hog Heaven | MVN - Most Valuable Network » Blog Archive » Carlos Rogers: The “X” Factor of the 2007 Redskins 2008 Scouting Report - Scouts Inc. Grade: 62 | Key Alert: None Comment: The 2005 first-round draft choice has lived up to expectations and continues to develop, starting 20 of 27 games over his first two seasons and gaining confidence with each repetition. He has long arms that he effectively uses to jam receivers out of their release in press coverage, knocking them off their routes and disrupting timing. He has loose hips that are fluid in transition in off coverage and the speed to turn and run vertically with wide receivers on deep balls. He has strong ball skills and can adjust to bad passes as well as track deep throws. He is able to snatch the ball or knock it down using his wingspan. His good technique and anticipation serve him well because he lacks the extra gear to run with elite receivers and does not have great recovery speed if out of position. As good as he is in man coverage, he is too soft in zone coverage at times and allows receivers too much room. That can be a problem because he likes to peek into the backfield and is susceptible to biting on play-action. When he guesses wrong he is not a good open-field tackler. Rogers could add size to his frame, but he has the athleticism to handle coverage assignments and the overall skills to have a long career.

Re: Time To Be A GM: Your 1st Round Pick Is...
First choice would be best player available with that said at the 21st spot in the 1st round (if we keep the pick), Phillip Merling DE, we need another speed rushing end to compliment AC and bring a dual threat to the opposing QB. Second choice would be Talib, we need to address the corner position this might be the perfect time with CR not ready to go at the start of the season and Springs old and running out of time in DC and his status still seems uncertain with team. (Yea, I know the team says they want to keep him, but what else would they say, could be trade time)
Finally, if both those guys are already picked. I would still go with best available, but maybe Calais Campbell DE or Malcolm Kelly WR.

Re: Time To Be A GM: Your 1st Round Pick Is...
My Pick: Sam Baker Tackle from USC. We need a good backup or a replacement for Jansen.
They will have two game against Javon Kearse, Strahan and Demarcus Ware. We need people who can hold their own. What I think is going to happen: Desean Jackson is going to slide to the 21st pick and DS is going to draft him. Snyder loves players that sell jerseys. Jackson is an exciting player and will have one of the top 3 most popular rookie jerseys. He's going to drop on most draft boards because he is going to show up to the combine weighing 160LBS and teams are going to compare him to Ted Ginn Jr and his performance as a rookie. Also, Teams are going to be afraid that he won't be able to get off the line or go over the middle. With the 21st pick, The redskins select Desean Jackson. |

Re: Time To Be A GM: Your 1st Round Pick Is...
Malcolm Kelly if he's there, Limas Sweed or Aqib Talib if not. We need a big time CB and/or WR, and OL depth.

Re: Time To Be A GM: Your 1st Round Pick Is...
my pick depending on who's available.
1.D.Rodgers-Cromartie 2.Aquib Taliq 3.Tracy Porter 4.Antoine Cason *defintiely should pick CB 1st rd. There will be a few Excellent DE available for us in rd.2 that wouldn't really be worth that 1st pick EX.Lawrence Jackson.I am really starting to like Tracy Porter now but ultimately my favorite pick I think would be Aquib Taliq.DMC is Awesome I just don't think he'll be there at #21. |

"With the 21st pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, The Washington Redskins select
Malcolm Kelly, WR Oklahoma". The Redskins need a receiver with size to compliment Santana Moss and Antwaan Randle El and at 6-4 and 219 lbs, Malcolm Kelly certainly fits that bill. This could just as easily be a guy like Calais Campbell too. |

*Draft pending on the following FA acquisitions...
A. Odom DE (Univ Alabama) Tenn Titans Elton Brown OT (UVA) Arizona Cardinals Rnd 1 Thomas DeCoud (Cal - S). I think Doughty is some hot garbage. And we compete in the NFC EAST... Rnd 2 Chis Williams (OT - Vandy) or Sam Baker (OT - USC) I'm tired of losing either Samuels or Jansen for the whole year (past 3 years). We need a pedigree O-Lineman... Rnd 3 Jordy Nelson (WR - KSU) Assuming we dont get Berrian or Ocho Cinco... And we actually HAVE this pick. I also say if we get Nelson, trade Randle El and let Mix and Nelson round out the top 3 receivers... He also TORCHED Auburn AND #1 CB Talib. Rnd 5 Chevis Jackson (DB - LSU) * If taken Simeon Castille (DB - Alabama) Both big pedigree CBs. SEC. Nuff said. Rnd 6 Dennis Dixon (QB - Oregon) If he's still on the board... or Xavier Lee (QB - FSU) Rnd 7 Kendall Langford (DE/DT - Hampton) Raw talent. And if he's here. |

Re: Time To Be A GM: Your 1st Round Pick Is...
That type of thinking is a little backwards and a reason the Redskins are either over the cap every year or have very few draft picks.
First, needs are established by position. Then, see if those needs can be addressed in the DRAFT FIRST. If you need a big possession WR and the draft is deep in that position, draft a guy. Stay away from trades and high price free agents that wreck the cap. It is cheaper to sign rookies than FA's. Plus you retain draft compensation rights after the third season. And you don't have to mortgage your future in his third year, the tender amounts are pre-set by the league so no negotiating is involved. It is cheaper and cap friendly. If needs cannot be addressed in the draft then you look at Free Agency. If not available in Free Agency, then look to trade. Why do you think they hold the scouting combine BEFORE the free agency signing period begins? P.S. I don't think Jordy Nelson drops to the 3rd round, he'll go in the second. |

This is only your 4th post, and already you impress with a full draft card! Major props! I've preferred a DE/DT in the 1st round for the past eleven years. I was almost ready to change up to Talib after viewing the practices for the N/S College Senior Bowl. I'll stick with the BPA at DE, but LDS will probably not look at my preference (again!). The 184 Mock Drafts in HailRedskins.com list C. Campbell in quite a few, but I don't know much about any player until post-combine, and just prior to NFL Draft day. Amazingly, the Washpost can call it 75-85% accurate one day before the 1st round. So, C. Campbell is my best guess.

That being said, I think our first pick does need to be in the defensive backfield ( e.g. - Cornerback).
