Second, he's a free agent; he wasn't fired.

Third, the Bills, TB, the Titans, the Skins and of course Seattle, have all expressed interest. While I don't have his travel itinerary on hand, it's not as if the guy is driving a beer truck.

After receiving an offer from the Redskins, free agent D.J. Hackett has decided to explore other options.

He was in Tampa Bay on Thursday and will fly to Carolina for a Friday visit, assuming the Bucs can't keep him in town. The Redskins remain on the prowl for a big receiver, a necessity in their new West Coast offense.

I think given the fact that we haven't gone and sign a whole bunch of free agents, it's ok to get a fair deal with Hackett. I mean he is not a head case like Brandon Lloyd, we're not giving away any picks for him, and he comes from a WCO and could flourish under Zorn. I think we are all too paranoid from the Skins' previous spending ways, but if we get a solid WR that can compliment Moss, ARE, and Cooley, I think that's a good deal for us. All of us would like to get Roy Williams or Larry Fitzgerald, but right now those guys are not available and they would cost us picks. I think as with the London Fletcher signing last yer, I'd be content with us signing Hackett and take care of our other needs through the draft.

The thing I like about a potential Hackett deal is it keeps us from doing something like trading a 1st and a 2nd for the right to pay Chad Johnson $25 million guaranteed. Until this WR need is taken care of, I'm going to feel nervous about what Dan Snyder MIGHT do.

Satisfying the need for a 3rd WR who's worth a crap means we're much more likely to keep that nice collection of draft picks we've got.

Hackett's a guy that has made some big plays, and most importantly, our coaching staff knows him. Zorn knows exactly what he's getting (even if we don't) with this guy, meaning he's able to give Vinny plenty of input on his $ value.

We're not looking for a 3rd receiver. We're looking for a number 2. He's already told us that ARL is going to be in the slot.

It's the first free agent visit for either side. Hackett knows the offense Washington will run under new coach Jim Zorn and would fit nicely as a big wideout opposite Santana Moss. Free agent wide receiver D.J. Hackett is scheduled to arrive in the Washington area on Wednesday to meet with the Redskins.

While the Redskins are usually quite active in free agency, Hackett will be the first free agent to visit with the team since the period opened Feb. 29.

"We'll take a look and see if there's something that can work there," said Vinny Cerrato, Washington's executive vice president of football operations. "It's got to work for both sides, so we'll see what happens."

At 6 feet 2 and 208 pounds, Hackett, 26, could provide a big target for quarterback Jason Campbell. Hackett has played for the Seattle Seahawks since entering the league in 2004, and new Redskins coach Jim Zorn previously worked as the Seahawks' quarterbacks coach.

"We've said we'll look at any player who can help us improve as a team," Cerrato said. "Whether it's free agency, trades or the draft, we're going to do everything we can to get better."

Limited to only six games last season because of a high-ankle sprain, Hackett had 32 receptions for 384 yards (a 12.0-yard average) and three touchdowns in the regular season. He played a key role in the Seahawks' 35-14 victory over the Redskins in the first round of the NFC playoffs, catching six passes for 101 yards and one touchdown.

He has best season in 2006, setting personal marks with 45 catches for 610 yards (a 13.6-yard average) and four touchdowns. In his career, Hackett has 105 receptions for 1,394 yards (a 13.3-yard average) and nine touchdowns.

Hackett's agent has been talking with other teams, but has no other visits planned at this time.

D. J. Hackett's contract has to have productivity bonuses in it, i would not pay 3mil or 4mil per year for someone who's always hurt.
