In the first episode this season Locke did say that he saw Walt but that he "was taller." Maybe Walt and Michael aged when they left the island because they didn't follow the correct course.

That was because the reason they wrote them out was because Walt was going to grow and they simply couldn't get away from that. The comment from Locke was a nod to everyone who figured this was the reason. It was just a little joke they threw in. Supposedly.

I understand that they just made the joke because Walt is bigger than I am, but not it actually seems like they can use that to advance the story even more.
