Pliny The Elder | Russian River Brewing Company | Santa Rosa, CA | BeerAdvocate

Just take a second to look at greatness. I haven't had it in a couple years. It's like the east coast holy grail.

i read that there is an old dusty skunked bottle of Pliny sitting on a shelf in a liqour store in Dupont Circle for $39.99.

apparently, Pliny doesnt get shipped past the mid west (st louis river or something) so to get it, you literally need to have someone ship it to you or something. not as easy as driving up to philly like i planned on doing.

Redskinsmike - have you ever seen Pliny avail to ship to Md from one of your websites?

There is a bottle for that price at the Dupont store. Try Blackwells wine and spirits. You can't order from their website but if you email gary@blackwellswines.com and ask for a beerlist he will send it to you with instructions on how to order. They almost always have Pliney but sometimes have limits. I ordered a case from them a few years ago so its not always limited. On another note I do believe Hop Hunter will be a year round offering. Also if you are in Arlington ever try K-1 liquors. Best beer selection I've ever seen.

Laganitas Maximus ipa...this is a double. Not as good as their other double ipa ' hop stoopid,' but still solid.

Finally got to try some SN Hop Hunter yesterday at a beer festival. It lives up to the hype. The rep said it should be hitting stores everywhere this week.

yes it has finally hit the shelves. I was expecting a bomber at $8 a piece but its $8.99 a sixer! really tasty. it seems like an IPL, seems a little thinner than an IPA. Thinner is not the right word. silkier finish? i hope it sticks around for more than 1 month and becomes part of their all year beers.

-------------------------------

i visited Magruders on Conn Ave. really good selection but not as good as canton crossing, perfect pour or bo brooks imo.

they did have bell's two hearted ale and founder's breakfast stout and session ipa which you cant find in MD. but they didnt have great divide or some others you can find in MD. the prices were normal (12.99 for firestone, etc.)

------------------------

stopped by fenwicks in Silver spring. selection is good but the prices are gouging. 15.99 for firestone? 17.99 for titan IPA? i think sculpin was 20.99 for a sixer. i'll stop by in a pinch but i normally buy 4 sixers at a time (get 10% case discount) and i wont be doing that here.

DC craft beer fest - anyone going?

Their limits change from time to time and sometimes they don't have limits. It all depends on their stock. I have always had good experiences with them so happy drinking.

Get your Pliney yet? I am expecting a case of Three Floyds Yum Yum tomorrow. Online is a great option if you are willing to pay a little extra to get something out of reach. I look at it as if I saw it in a bar I would definitely order it at bar prices so this is still a deal.

lol I also justify spending a little extra for good beer by comparing it to the price/quality of stadium beer.

$10 for 22 oz of pliny (inclds shipping) vs $9 for 20 oz of coors light.

by using this comparison in decision making, i seem to always splurge.

No i didnt get my order yet. I got a little greedy. You are only allowed 2 pliny per order but i talked up the girl who answered the phone and she sd she would see if i could get 4 pliny if i got 12 bottles total ..... gary denied me.

so i had to re-order and it should be here wednesday.

*** i did get another case of monument city 51 rye yesterday for $47. i had to special order it bc when it hits the shelves in baltimore, it only lasts a day or two then you have to wait a few weeks for a new shipment. this 51 rye is outstanding. i think only a few stores carry it, still brewed in very small batches it seems.

Re: Let's talk good beer

i also started drinking my beer at almost room temperature.

the diff flavors and malts, hops just explode. a lot easier to enjoy the subtle nuances.

certain beers i didnt really dig, then i drank them at almost room temperature and it was like a totally diff beer.

Yeah some beers are definitely better at room temp. Imperial stouts in particular are tastier as they warm up a bit.

thats good news. glad to see the brothers are distributing outside the city lines. they sd distribution was going to be very limited. they do pint nights in the city, buy a pint of 51 keep the glass. i need to catch up to one of those.

what would you rate the 51 rye? for me its 4.5. i wonder if i am over-hyping the beer. the citra is really jumping out to me and is starting to dominate. its weird. a beer tastes a certain way but then when you drink enough of it, you start noticing all these subtle flavors that eventually your brain is now predisposed looking for and the beer now tastes different then when you first started drinking it. the citra, centennials cascades were always front and center (which I like and look for) but now it is overpowering to my taste buds.

even with 51% rye malt, that earthy nutty tone is being overpowered.
