According to him, "Generation Kill" has about as much to do with the real war as Star Wars has to do with legitimate space travel.
I heard the exact opposite thing from a friend of mine. Does he realize that the series is based on the book (which is non-fiction) and that some of the actors were the real Marines who invaded Iraq?

Don't know. He was in Ramadi for months, so what does he know;-) Maybe he's making it all up.

I do not have HBO and have not seen any of this but it is very common that even though it is based on a true story things get added and removed to add entertainment value. So while the story line itself may be true all the other stuff was added.

Of course it all depends on the individual's perspective. Obviously not everyone has the same experience over there, but from what I've read the series is a pretty accurate portrayal.

I wasn't calling your friend a liar. I was just noting that my buddy was in the 75th Ranger Regiment, which took part in the initial invasion of Iraq. Granted, that's an army unit, but he says GK is pretty true to life.

As Matty pointed out, I think each soldier, marine and airman has a different experience. So, to one person the series might seem unrealistics and, to others, it might seem like a documentary.

I had a GK marathon over the weekend so I'm caught up except for the finale. Pretty good series overall. It does't touch Band of Brothers but that bar is set pretty high.

Re: 'Generation Kill' offers insider look at the Iraq war

I watched the finale last night. It was a pretty good series. It gives some insight on the tactics used and not used during the initial invasion, mentality of the RECON division and marines, and the overall intentions of the Commanding Officers. Now, how much is accurate i have no idea.

From an entertainment side, if you expecting some drama to unfold you are going to be disappointed (there are exciting moments, but this is not Saving Private Ryan or Platoon. If you want to see what is going on during the invasion then you'll be interested. I'm trying not to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen the last episode.
