Tony McGee on the Saints

Hello Everyone,

It’s great to be back after a big win last week.

I thought it was a phenomenal game defensively for the Redskins. From start to finish the Redskins really took control of that side of the football, realistically only giving up 10 points to a very good offense (remembering that 7 points came off a very short field and the other 7 off a punt return). I thought Jason Taylor was much more effective against the run, and you really see why they brought that guy in here with his performance last week. The defense was the reason they won the football game last week. Looking at another specific player, Chris Horton had a phenomenal debut as a rookie safety. I think Washington needs to be very excited to have a young guy like that who can make a real impact in a game, especially at a position that has gotten weaker. I still think Reed Doughty is the guy that you have to keep starting at safety, but Horton will provide great depth and as he develops could turn into an excellent starter, albeit just one game.

Offensively, I’ll be honest and say that I was disappointed as a whole. Obviously, you can’t be disappointed with the end of the game, but more on that in just a second. I thought, especially in the first half that the Redskins squandered opportunities with the football. They drove the ball into scoring position 5 times and came away with only 9 points. They were able to catch fire at the end, but statistics like that are not going to win you a lot of football games. Now the positive is, that they were moving the ball very effectively on the Saints, but they need to cash in those chances if they want it to mean anything. Now I thought in the 4th quarter, we finally got a glimpse of what we can expect from this offense. There will still be bumps in the road, but it was so refreshing to see Jason Campbell take control of a football game in the 4th quarter and be the reason his team came out on top. Furthermore, from a coaching aspect, it was great to see Jim Zorn just take control and go for the win, instead of throwing it back on the defense for that last minute.

Finally on special teams, this was the one real disappointing area of play. As far as Antwan Randel El returning kicks, I think they are going to look to start exploring other options there. If you look, as he has had a more increased role in the offense and became a full time starter, his numbers on kick returns has dipped. It is very, very difficult to be a full time starter in this league, and than try fielding punts and doing special teams on top of that. In addition, Durant Brooks is kicking for his job at this point. Based on the preseason I thought that Derrick Frost should have stayed with the team and won the job, and I understand the “investment” aspect of it. However, if Brooks doesn’t improve it could end up costing this team a football game in the long run.

Overall, it was a great game and a great win for Washington. I think this week vs Arizona is a must win, given the upcoming opponents.

Finally, I have a favor to ask. I do the color commentary for Howard Bison’s football on Saturday afternoons . This week is at 1pm, vs Florida Atlantic. Were trying to generate more interest and hits for the broadcast to try to push it a little bit at the school. If possible, anyone who could just go to the broadcast link (HBCU Properties - Content)
And just generate a hit for us, it would be much appreciated. Were trying to get as many as possible, so I was hoping you could help out a bit.

Thanks again guys. See you next week.
Tony
