Because he had two choices: 1) Curl up in a ball and cower like a girly man; or 2) step up, brace himself and be ready to drive back into the hit.

Are you kidding me? We are not watching the same clip. he took a shot at the player, why cant he move backwards and/or towards his left? he still would be standing and not disrupt the play.

One of the more bizarre things I have seen in sports.

Gotta agree with you on this one. It looked like he was shuffling directly in the way of the ball carrier. I think he had a flashback to his playing days.
