Re: What's Wrong with the Redskins?

With the way the special teams have played, I don't see any reason that James Thrash or Todd Yoder makes it on the team next year. Keeping people around for special teams value is important, but it's hard to be worse on teams than these guys have been, and Thrash is useless against 31 defenses, Detroit being the exception.

JC is not the biggest problem by far. Under better conditions he may take us to victory.

However, there's no doubt that QB is the MOST important position on the team.

I blame Vinny and Danny for this situation. Top Draft picks must go the the OL and DL on a regular basis. You can't just buy your way to the top in these areas with FA. Using the FA-only strategy means keeping players past their prime (see, Bruce Smith). Until our lines improve and get younger we will never know how good the rest of the team really is.

Re: What's Wrong with the Redskins?

We can't blame Jason for all of the problems. Today we got manhandled, punched in the mouth, and had dirt kicked in our eye. After that they told "your mamma" jokes about us while eating candy they bought with our lunch money.

The Offensive line couldn't keep 4 guys from getting pressure on us. The DB's were playing decent, but kinda on their own sheet of music. LB's and D-line did a good job in the first Qtr, but got complacent after that. Our WR's were dropping balls that were tagging their chests. Our running game.....Oh wait, we didn't have one. Portis should have been pulled out of the game in the end of the 3rd. Not because of his play, but because we weren't getting anywhere with him in or out. Why risk further injury when we are not running the ball well?

We were outplayed today by a better football team. We were out coached by a better coaching staff. And on top of that, I could still hear people in the stands cheering for the Giants more than I heard our "Fans" cheering for the Skins. Fuck it......I'm pissed.

Tripp, I know you break the plays down, and have way more knowledge than I do. I mean I love your breakdowns. But, I think you are being harsh on the D. what you say may be accurate. but if our offense can't sustain drives, and leaves the D on the field for nearly a whole quarter than they are going to have breakdowns. Our O never gives the D a chance, and I think Blanche may be overcompensating because he knows that our O won't score. I think GB was so disgusted with the offense today, but had to bite his tongue.

  1. Clearly there's enough blame to go around but the blame should be distributed fairly. The lion share belongs to Zorn and the receivers.
  2. If you watched the game you can't help but notice has awful the play calling was. The lack of diversity in plays, the stubbornness to run the ball when there's 8 in the box. We threw down field once, once!
  3. There's no need to revisit the past, the discussion is about this game and this season.
  4. Rookie or no rookie Zorn is expected to win. You won seven games, great! Now go and win 1, 2, 3 more games!
  5. If you get your hands on the ball you got to catch the rock. Eli's receivers did that all game regardless of where the ball was placed.
  6. Where was Santana? Was he even in the game? Hell, where was Randle El? If they take Moss away do something to counter that and keep them honest. It's like this team is handicapped even when their best receiver is double teamed. Surely there are plays to take advantage of the double coverage.

Re: What's Wrong with the Redskins?

I know that d-line will make any front five look like hell, but our front five just seem to give up. come on renaldo wynn beat the hell out of Jansen like he got his mom pregnant. And samuals seemed to not even be there either. We have to sure up the edges. Campbell got to get rid of the ball. After the ring of fame ceramony. I was ready to suit up. If you cant get up after something like that, go the hell home. Portis is a warrior. He should have never even played today. And he laid it all on the line, and for what everyone else to give up on him. Show some pride. If I were Portis I would jerk a few players up and let em know.

Well, the offense has controlled the time of possession for most of the season. That is one thing they've done well.

But the blitzing is getting old. Especially on third and long when you should never, ever blitz. Because we basically allow teams to convert, and it's sad.

I understand why it looks like I'm just picking a fight here, but anyone who thinks our defense is playing well right now is looking at points against and ignoring the game on the field.

Today, I thought they played a pretty good game against a top offense, but giving the Giants free passing lanes by not playing to the situation is still inexcusable coaching. And as a season-long thing, there's a lot of players on the defense who are underachieving.

There is another way to look at it, a more positive way: This team lost a superstar coverage safety to tragedy, quickly found a replacement, and have managed to stay respectable despite the loss of one of it's younger top talents. For that, I commend them.

But either way we look at it, the perception that the defense is being victimized by the offense is 100% wrong. Both have their issues, but the offenses seem depth-based and correctable. The defensive issues look more serious, like they need Landry and Rogers to become superstars, and they need to draft a great player on the front seven to fix it.

Basically, the pieces are in place on offense, and the holes need to be filled. The defense has remained solid, but has no top end talent (yet), which is a bigger issue, IMO.

Re: What's Wrong with the Redskins?

I can't figure out why, with all the veterans on this team, that the Skins can't "get up" for key games. It's something that Riggo mentioned on the post game radio show...

Actually thats not to far fetch..Notice how he buckles when pressure gets around him. They barely put a hand on him breezing by and he loses composure. Its not all him but w.w.b.d.(what would Brett Do)

Brett would throw three picks and run around to show everyone how much he's enjoying himself.

Uh, barely put a hand on him? Dude, what game were you watching? They were molesting him all day. Jason gets hit within 2.5 seconds of the snap more than any other QB in the league. Or are you just saying that because you'd like to see a 6th round rookie QB start the rest of the way?

I haven't read all of your posts in this thread, so forgive me if I missed any comments along the way, but I think you're underestimating the problems along the offensive line. I don't think they are depth-based and correctable at those spots.

Our RT is a major weakness for us. Jansen is consistently getting pushed back into the face of Campbell. Rabach and Randy Thomas at times have been overmatched physically in one-on-one matchups. I have no beef with Samuels, he's not pass protecting like his all-pro self but he's doing pretty darn well considering the knee. Kendall has been the best of the bunch, clearing a path in the running game rather well, a role Randy Thomas used to play for us but now seemingly does not. We never get him out in space anymore, which is either an indictment of the coaching staff or it says that Randy is slowing down.

But whether it's Rabach making the line adjustments or Campbell doing it, the line is failing to pick up blitzes effectively. And when it's not a mental gaffe, one of them simply gets physically beat one on one.

RT has to be our top priority entering the offseason, and G and C aren't far behind.

I agree that our WR play has been miserable and is a major problem. But I don't see the offensive line being an easily correctable issue.

Re: What's Wrong with the Redskins?

What Schneed said. It's kind of scary that we will need to take a hard look at RT, RG, C and LG (Kendall is a UFA) after the season and Samuels is no spring chicken.

I don't want to make it seem like I'm ignoring the problems on the offensive line, talent-wise. Obviously, Rabach is a problem, and Jansen isn't all that. But I've noticed significant improvement from this group since the Steelers debacle. Which is why I'm not going off on them right now. It's because there's nothing more to say that hasn't already been said: there's some seriously under-talented pass blockers on this OL, but there was also a cohesiveness issue early in the year that killed us against Pittsburgh, and I think that has largely been fixed since the bye week.

I apply the depth-based tag, because I feel one injury could bring back the cohesiveness issues. Heyer in for Jansen seems like a lateral move, talent-wise, but if Rabach is being a weak link, we have no depth to place in for him.

It's not like Samuels and Kendall aren't great lineman, it's that they are part of a unit that needed to not get financially tied down to the other three guys. It's depth based only because Samuels and Kendall could be part of something great, but get lumped in with the rest only because the guys on the right side have really sucked at times.
