re: D.C. Examiner: Zorn's job in jeopardy? (not so fast he's coming back)

The big question is whether or not the team is quitting. Everything else is peripheral at this point. While I don't know the answer definitively, it has neither sounded nor looked good recently. It's easy to preach continuity and learning from Gibbs and all that, and I am inclined to agree to an extent, but bringing back a guy who is sure to face the same problems next season merely for continuity's sake is worse than firing someone too quickly.

Losing is one thing. But Zorn is currently captaining a full scale implosion. If the team loses out and the locker room continues to unravel and the playcalling continues to be impotent I don't understand how a change can not be on the table.

This is when your veteran players leadership comes into play. Guys like Fletcher, Samuels, etc. need to tell the malcontents to get with the program or get the **** out!!

Agreed 100%.

dj I think u r seeing the forest through the trees for sure. I see everybody debating the importance of the record, debating how much leniency has to be given a rookie HC, etc etc. I don't want to say those are necessarily stupid things to talk about, but there importance is nil compared w/ that of Zorn's ability to lead a team. I believe it is painfully obvious he has lost this team w/ the exception of JC. To the novice fan's eye this offense plays like it detests being on the field. There's zero intensity w/ sporadic exceptions from Sellers, Portis and maybe Moss. (This includes JC - i understand he's never been Favrelike in his demeanor - but now his lack of passion/intensity is a liability IMHO for a team in desperate need of a leader).

Getting back to the big picture I don't think it's a stretch to say Zorn is the worst coach in the league right now. He has the luxury of concentrating almost solely on the offense because of Blache and yet we have had the absolute worst offense in football since the beginning of November (we've averaged about 10 points a game, which to my knowledge is the worst in football over that period of time.) What is critical is whether Zorn can begin to lead the team over the next two games. I don't care about winning/losing at this point. I am talking about whether he can get 11 guys on the field to play like professionals, in fact that's all we can hope for at this point. If Zorn cannot do that his status as an HC is unjustified. There is no reason to believe he'll be able to lead/motivate the same group of guys next year he failed to lead/motivate this year.

After that effort today the answer might be becoming quite clear.

There's no quit in a team that gets down 17-0 and then comes back to basically tie the game.

It's unfortunate that the call got overturned and later we fumbled, because we had basically done all the work it takes to get back in the game. But even the fumble was a bad call because Sellers was clearly stopped for two or three seconds before they blew the whistle and ruled touchback. Great job, morons. Way to play it off like you didn't screw up either.

Remember, our offense only got into trouble when we tried to rely on the running game. Our passing game had it's way with them. They had no pressure on Campbell, and he picked the intermediate zones apart.

I'd say a team has quit when it gets down 17-0 to the Bengals in the first place.

If it quit it wouldn't have scored 13 points. Bottom line, Sellers screwed up with that fumble.

Wait, so we quit, but then decided not to quit?

Can we stop throwing the term "Quit" around when that's clearly not the problem?

"Clearly" not the problem? I don't see how anyone can say that.

If scoring 13 points against one of the worst teams in the league is all it takes to prove to you that they truly are Spartans, then have at it.

They stunk up the joint with the playoffs on the line against the Cincinnati Bengals. So yes, in my book this team has quit.

Your evidence that they've quit though is bordering on conspiracy theory, and at best, is weak.

Performance in a single game is not evidence for much, especially an outlandish accusation.

When the Bucs were down 14-0 to the Lions just two weeks ago, I guess the only logical conclusion, according to you, is that they quit on Jon Gruden. Nevermind the rest of the game. The start of the game on the road apparently is evidence enough for you to draw a conclusion (that isn't necessarily supported by the evidence anyway).

So we have lots of "high character guys" who just plain suck?

They mailed it in today. I don't see why people find that statement so appalling.

Because it's false.

Outside of that, you might be onto something.

I wouldn't say they suck. They're just not as good as we all think they are.
