Finally! We got someone that I actually wanted! Haynesworth . . . . eh whatever. This move was actually worth the money. This might make up for not getting Mack and drafting Sanchez, not!

Well at least we won't be blowing another pick on a punter this year (thanks Vinnie).

Finally a move that will make a significant difference next year...

I hope to God they don't piss away another draft for Snyder's eye candy.

I thought we took care of our punting situation in the 2008 draft on Durrant Brooks from Georgia Tech. Oh thats right we cut him cause he could not hack it. Nice wasted pick.

I figured we were going to sign him, but man with everything else that's been going on lately I totally forgot him.

But, to me, this move is a reminder that we need to look at the big picture-meaning all our free agents moves and draft picks-this offseason before making any assesment of how we did. So if we draft Sanchez, yet are still able to fill other needs (getting a punter was one) then I still think it could be a pretty good offseason. Of course, what we would all like is a good regular season and playoffs.

I don't know a lot about punting but I'd guess that the best yardstick for judging a punter's effectiveness would be the average net gain per punt?

How has Hunter Smith done the last 3 years in this category?

2008 - 11th in the league.
2007 - 37th in the league.
2006 - 30th in the league.

That doesn't exactly convince me our punting woes are over.

I think the net gain tells alot more about the special teams as a unit, then just the punter. Hunter is 31, has had a solid avg yard per punt-consistently higher than the Skins punter in any given year, and hopefully will be an upgrade. As it stood before the signing, our punter was (ok I don't know his name, but he couldn't beat out Frost, Plack or Brooks). All we want from our punter is consistency, and not to shank when we are backed up. Hunter has proven capable of atleast that.

Wow, 37th in the league? Last time I checked, there were 32 teams. So either you're stats are wrong, or he had worse stats than back up kickers.

Seriously though, he's a good punter whose certainly well rested, because he never had to punt with Peyton Manning at the helm.

That makes signing him even better! Deion getting tackled by a punter right before he gets in the endzone. Good stuff.

Hunter is one of the better punters in the league. No need for hand wringing here.

HOLY CRAP!
I actually know him! My former mother in law used to be his teacher / principal and I met him at a couple functions...I haven't talked to him since he signed with the Colts though. I'm THRILLED he is Skin!
