Who should we re-sign in 2005?

We asked the question of who should we cut in 2005.

Now, lets ask the question of who do we need to re-sign?

I think we need:

1. Fred Smoot - I think we could get him back for a 5 year deal/24 million dollar deal with about a 12 million dollar signing bonus.
2. Antonio Pierce - He is probably looking at around a 6 million dollar bonus - maybe like 4 years at 15 million.
3. Joe Salave'a - He is a solid run stopper. I'd like to see him back if he would accept around a 3 year / 4 million dollar contract or so.
4. Lemar Marshall - Also has been solid. To be honest, he doesn't really merit much of a signing bonus, but I'd like to see him back.
5. Ron Warner - Promising youngster.
6. Andre Lott - Was a started when the season began. If he can recover, he would provide us with good depth.
7. Robert Royal - Seems to be improving as a blocker and I haven't really seen him drop the ball when called upon. He is a started and seems fairly solid.
8. Tim Hasselbeck - I think that he is in that Koy Detmer mold, a guy who won't cause problems on the bench, and can start in a pinch and give you some solid snaps.

Well heres the way I look at it:

Smoot and Perice are #1/#2, far and away. We need both of those guys back without question. From what I hear, they are both very well along in their contract talks so I'm pretty confident we'll get them back.
Salave'a would be nice to get back too, but it'd have to come at a good contract. Same goes for the rest of those guys, I defintley want Ron Warner back too. To be honest, I think Hasslebeck will gain a little attention this offseason, so we might not be able to get him back.

I must have missed the "Who Should We Cut" thread, but I have a question about that topic anyway.

Do we need Mike Barrow? If Pierce re-signs, and with Lemar Marshall and Chris Clemons making some noise, couldn't we just tear up Barrow's contract and say, "see ya..." ?? This defense has proven so far that Barrow is clearly expendable.

What would be the cap implications if Barrow is released?

I agree with all of the above, I want as little change as possible especially on the defense. No need to fix what isn't broken. Bring back all of our own guys, within reason of course.

From Sunday's Washington Times

This is from their Monday Morning QB section. Obviously, I don't agree with their assesment of Smoot:

Q: It sounds like the defense is going to stay together next year if Fred Smoot and Antonio Pierce come back. What are the odds of that happening?

A: Pierce sounds likely to sign shortly, but it's too early to say whether the Redskins will be able to keep Smoot. Ironically, Pierce is the one who wants to be shown the love, and Smoot is the one who is most interested in simply returning to Washington. The latter fact should help the club as it negotiates with Smoot, as will coach Joe Gibbs' determination to keep the core.

Q: Pick one. Who's more important to keep?

A: Pierce. Smoot has played very well this season and his toughness is a motivating factor for his teammates, but the Redskins could find another mid-level cover corner and not lose much in terms of their defensive psyche. Pierce, meanwhile, has become the lifeblood of this unit. He's almost a coach on the field, and his confidence and intensity ripple through other players. Plus, an offseason working as the No. 1 middle 'backer will help him roar into 2005.

Man, I love both these guys, but I see their point. I still think Smoot is a huge emotional leader for our team. Like Matty, I want as little change on the defensive side of the ball as possible! Maybe add a little more depth, but nothing drastic!

Barrow: Would it be cheaper to just keep him on our roster? Maybe we can play him as a lineman, or put him in on 3rd when we move Arrington to DE. Do something to get him some production so we can try to trade him for a 7th rounder!

Barrow will likely be back because we don't stand to save anything by cutting him, his cap hit is about the same either way. As we've seen this year you can never have enough depth, so I fully expect him to be back.

wouldn't it be better to take the cap hit on him now instead of in 2006 when we are going to be in salary cap hell

I would say no, because the Cap is going to keep going up.

Peirce and Smoots are obviously our #1 priorities. They both bring so much to the game every week. I actually think we need Smoot back more than Peirce though, although we need them both back. Just when I saw yesterday how much our secondary struggled without Springs, I would imagine it would be the same if Smoot was out. So even if he left, we would have to get someone else in there, which would cost money too. Plus Smoot is a freakin Redskin! Perice was an exellent find too, undrafted free agent if you need em.

I love watching Pierce before the snap, he's always getting guys in the right spots and making adjustments. It's almost like watching Peyton Manning at the line with all the adjustments.

Regarding the secondary, do not discount the Sean Taylor Factor, receivers are going to be real hesitant going over the middle, or anywhere near #36. Still, I agree this season the best free-agent signings will be keeping our team together, it is time to put an end to the constant roster churn. Resigning Smoot and Pierce needs to be a top priority.

There is a different thread titled, "O-Line the real problem" (or something to that effect) I have to agree that the team needs to upgrade a center. The problem though is do you draft a rookie, or do you have to get a free agent to fill the gap? Is Lenny Freidman (spelling?) salvagable? As whole though a winning season would have been nice but if we finish strong at 7-9 I will be happy considering the rough start. I am optimistic for next year if we keep our core intact, and most importantly start Ramsey

The Sean Taylor Factor... I like that...

I think cuts and cap reworkings are going to be key. We will resign Smoot and Pierce, they both want to be here. Anyone know what DEs and DTS will be free agents? Its a shame we didnt get D.Woody in the offseason this year, he would have be an amazing center to have
