Before someone points out Steve Smith, I'm well aware that small receivers can be #1's, but I just don't think Santana's good enough to be a go to receiver anymore.
He is if he can get 1 on 1 vs. about 80% of the cbs in the nfl. The problem has been that every team knows the only other guy on the team they might have to double is Cooley, and he spent a no. of plays last year blocking in pass pro, then releasing for short safey valve patterns like a rb.

But overall I agree that Moss can't be expected to be THE guy this year & beyond. It's been an issue for the offense since he got here - no legit #2 wr- and soon age will catch up to him.

I agree. I think the other problem is he hasn't been able to be healthy for a full season lately. I think his injuries has cause his to lose a step the last two seasons.

So let's say in '10 Kelley becomes the #1, Thomas the #2 and Moss in the slot? What does the team do with Randle El. Does he strictly become a punt returner?

I don't see the Skins keeping ARE at his salary structure for being a punt returner. Looking at the Salary Cap Summary on this site I don't think the Skins can let go of ARE until 2012 due to his large release fees, but then again I did not think they would have let go of Jansen for this reason either.

If ARE can't contribute as a #3 WR I really think his pay would justify getting cut.

I agree. I would add that he seems to have lost a little explosiveness, perhaps. In all of these dream WR scenarios, I see ARE packing his bags.

The salary cap chart here assumes the skins choose to pick up an option and extend ARE beyond the 2009 season. They won't. Unless he somehow transforms himself into a #1 receiver this season, the skins will not pick up his option and he will be an unrestricted free agent in 2010 (Same for Andre Carter).
