Last I heard from anyone inside Redskins Park (and I think this was a Stan Hixon interview), Roydell Williams is the front runner for #5 spot right now...though ultimately I think it won't be him

Re: Best Training Camp Battle of 2009

I don't think it will be Right Tackle. It seems as if it is Heyer's job to lose. He was the starting tackle at the start of last season. I know Mike Williams has lost a lot of weight but I don't think he will make it to the field until mid season.
The same goes for nickel corner, it's Smoot's until he starts blowing it in the regular season
I think the choice has got to be QB. If colt starts killing it, which I know he will, Zorn will have a hard time keeping Todd on the team.

It's gotta be RT. Heyer may be penciled in as the starter to begin camp, but you can't tell me if Mike Williams has a good camp he won't put some serious pressure on the coaches to start him. Heyer is hardly the kind of player you can look at and say yeah, he's got that job all locked up.

i picked R.T. because i feel its an open competition. i have to believe the skins are hoping someone really steps forward and wins the job

I picked RT fairly quickly and without too much thought and wish I could change my vote. I still think RT will be close but as a "go to the wire" battle I think the 5th WR is going to be the last decision made on cut down night and going to be the slot where the "can we find a keep the 6th as a ST guy" come into play.

CRedskinsRule, we have Dave Rayner competing with Suisham.

I think that will actually be the tightest battle and will come down to Rayner nailing a 51 yarder right before halftime of the last preseason game to give the Redskins a 13-10 lead heading into the locker room.

One other one that I didn't include (but probably should have) that I think could come down to the wire is the #3 RB/KR battle. But those positions won't necessarily be filled by the same person like they have in the past (Rock)

Re: Best Training Camp Battle of 2009

I went with #5 WR, but this was a tough question. For me, it came down to the fact that I think the starting RT will be an ongoing battle until and/or unless someone clearly dominates. Meaning even if a selection is made on the last week of preseason, the "losers" are still going to be on the team, and waiting for their chance. But the #5 WR, that's more of a go/nogo situation. You either show your stuff and make the team, or you don't and you go home. For that reason, I think the coaches will have a tough decision on that position going into the last weeks of the the preseason. I almost went with Kicker, but do we have another kicker other than Suisham on roster?

As for the Starting LDE, again I think Daniels starts, with everyone else vying to prove they are the heir apparent.

Re: Best Training Camp Battle of 2009

i picked cb because I think the players vying are so different in what they bring. I'm hoping the competitions along the line are exciting but I don't think Jarmon or Buzzbee really stand a chance of seeing any playing time in the first half of a game this preseason unless injuries pile up.

Re: Best Training Camp Battle of 2009

I picked RT only because it's been the biggest question mark of the entire offseason. Heyer goes in as the starter with all of the coaching staff's support but with a strong push by Williams he could be nudged to a backup role.

I picked RT. I feel that the more time that goes by the more Mike Williams improves.

I think RT simply because it is the most important. All the others we have decent options with varying degrees of skills. At RT we are rally looking for one guy to stand out amongst what could be some serious mediocrity. I hope someone just shines and entrenches them self by game 3 but we'll see.

I think the battle for Mike Williams right now is to get in shape and make the team. If he's the starter by opening day, it's a miracle. I do think he'll make the team, but if he beats out Heyer in the short time he's had, I'll be surprised. Heyer hasn't just been sitting on his ass since last season.

I definitely agree. Heyer is no slouch and I think he's determined to win the RT job. I voted for the CB battle, because you need to have 3 solid CB's to cover WR's especially in the NFC East. I think Barnes has a shot to take the job from Smoot.
