I know JC only got a few possesions but for an offense that can't score points, don't you think it's time to start taking more chances downfield? So why not start in a meaningless pre season game? Every first team offense I watched did it. Why can't we? Why did we drafted Malcom Kelly? To run pass patterns short of the 1st down marker? Let the guy run down field and try and jump over someone or get a PI?
I agree. And there's nothing wrong with wanting to see the first team offense take a few shots in Thursday's game, especially when they were there to be taken. It's not "vitriol" or hate. The offense was inept last year, so why not expect to see a little more aggressiveness from the first unit, especially with all the excuses about the O line, receivers, first season in the system, etc.

We can put it on Campbell for not giving Devin Thomas more chances, but then we're ignoring the elephant in the room.
I wondered about the same thing. I like DT more than you do but the boy seems to run poor routes or be in the wrong place too often.

Re: Om Field: Review - Six Campbell Pass Plays

Great write-up. After watching the NFL replay Friday, the game wasn't as bad as I thought (at least the first quarter or so). The first team did reasonably well facing a legendary defense. Our O-line was good (?!!), and JC completed several passes and moved the chains.

I'd love to see JC make that completion to Hagans. Otherwise, sure I'd like to see him throw downfield, but honestly I agree with GTripp and others -- a first down moves the chains. As long as he isn't throwing 6-7 yards when we need 10, like he used to do last year.

Sure, next several games -- let's air it up to DT or MK. As he gets more comfortable and trusts the young guys, he may start letting them win toss-ups in 1-on-1 coverage. But I'm not going to complain about a 13 yard completion for first down. That may have been one of the few things that went *right* all day..

I think/hope we'll see this offense open up as we go along.

I thought I heard JC say Hagans wasn't part of the progression on the pass play that was a little high to Hagans. I don't claim to be an expert on offense. Only on defense. Was Hagans running a clearout on that play? If so, you have to give it to JC for spotting Hagans. I thought it was a catchable pass by the way.

Hagans was definitely not one of the first three places Campbell looked. But I would think if he was clearing out, he wouldn't have been where he was.

It might have been a sight adjustment on his part to just kind of stop at the sideline. I don't really know.

Fair enough. I also heard JC say they were just trying to get a rhythm going in their limited time in there and would get into going deeper later. It's obvious to me the coaching staff were looking at particular things they wanted to see and Zorn seems pleased with JC's performance.

I'm sorry but I'm getting sick and tired of this "get in a rhythm" nonsense. Where is the urgency? How about make some big plays and put some points on the damn board??? Freakin Mark Sanchez did it. I still can't believe that after all the off season OTA and mimi camp stuff they came out and ran the same stupid ass offense. I guess why I'm so mad is because I watched NE come out and they were not messing around. They have the best QB and WR in football and they meant business....they threw it downfield and scored and we threw passes short of the 1st down marker.

I share your pain. All I can say is different teams have different plans about what they want to see. Each team is unique. I want to see the long ball often. It's the only way to spread the defense and keep them from stacking the line. But, and I'm guessing here, there are probably some basic things Zorn wants to see with this team before he opens things up. I just think it's too early to get excited. Apparently he wants to get the basics down first and I can't blame him even though I'm chopping at the bit myself to see this offense in high gear.

I still have no idea what you are so pissed about, but this reminds me of a funny Rex Grossman mock article about throwing downfield every play.

Let's sign Grossman after the Texans cut him.

I'm not worried about the urgency thing since it's the preseason. But dating back to last season, it definitely feels like we're unwilling to try to attack opposing defenses. We've got very little working for us vertically. Once Santana gets on the field and we can throw ARE in the slot with Thomas or Kelly at #2, that should change. It better change.

I hear what you're saying about NE, but Moss is one of the two or three best WRs to ever play the game, and Brady is in the same league at QB. You're talking about two first-ballot HOF'ers, and they also played an entire half, not just two series.

Good comment. Notice as well the important point: JC DID go downfield, Hagans just didn't catch it. You can't say that JC didn't take any shots downfield.

I would like to see the offense take more downfield shots, too, but it is really hard to critique the Ravens game in this light, especially in terms of the first team offense.

Re: Om Field: Review - Six Campbell Pass Plays

Hagans wasn't even a read on that respective play and this offense's progressions is one that focuses on ball control, so that's why Thomas wasn't looked at. If your first progression is open, then you freaking take it.

Re: Om Field: Review - Six Campbell Pass Plays

Not to argue over Campbell's/Zorn's/DT/everybody who may have possibly not been perfect, but isn't it a small comfort to everyone that the OL was good against the Ravens front D, I would say that was the best part of this whole article. BECAUSE, when the Oline was good last year we found ways to win. Hopefully this year when the OLine is good, we can find ways to win big. But I will take the win either way.
