4. Crackback: Eligible receivers who take or move to a position more than two yards outside the tackle may not block an opponent below the waist if they then move back inside to block.

Childress needs to be very clear about this rule. Favre's block was clearly illegal. I don't think it was intentional though. But I can tell you in all the time I coached, I never taught going low on a crackback, I always had my players aim for the opponents ribcage.

Someone on the Vikes coaching staff needs to get a clue since they're going to be running a good bit of the Wildcat with Harvin. On this play Favre just made a pussy block.

Thank you for actually invoking the rules of football. I was about to do the same but figured I would see if anyone had beaten me to the punch. Unfortunately it falls on deaf ears.

If anyone has ever played football you know that if you get a crack on an opponent who does not see you coming you will take him out every time, there is actually absolutely no reason to go low (apart from cowardice and/or stupidity - Trent Green essentially ended his career on a similar play when his head collided with the defensive players knee when he went for the block - he was peeling back rather than split wide, but same principle involved).

In the one of the last two preseason games (I can't remember which) Albert Haynesworth actually was a victim of a crackback cut. It was a different situation because he was within 3 yards of the LOS, but the actual dynamics of the play were exactly the same. The play flowed away from Big Al, he pursued, and an offensive lineman who he did not see peeled off and cut him at the knees. If that had resulted in a torn ACL for the $100 million man I bet we would be having a different conversation. It is a reckless and unnecessary move, period.
