There are too many ways to get players to lock yourself in to picking for any particular position with a given draft pick.

To me the smartest thing to do is to get the best available player, according to what your standards are for that. That way you are adding the most talent and ability to your team as possible.

If you have 10 hall of fame caliber players in the first round, but none of them play the position you most want to draft for, to me you're not real smart if you draft a player at that position and not get one of the top flight players. You want the most overall value for your choice.

We definitely need to get a wide receiver or two - but we can draft them if necessary with our other picks or sign free agents, rather than stretch to take a player just because he's a wide receiver.
