Re: Who for GM

Why not bring back Charley Casserly. He did great work with us, minus Shuler, but it happens.

Granted, I don't think Danny Boy will be willing to bring him back on the bus.

Round and Round we go people.

Agreed, Casserly made a lot of solid picks or us. Brian Mitchell, Stephen Davis, Kennan McCardell, Champ Bailey, and Frank Wycheck being the most notable ones. All drafted during his era. Or we can go back even further and get Bobby Bethard. But I'm sure someone has already suggested that.

I think Bethard lives in town here in Tn!

Re: Who for GM

Why not shoot for an assistant with one of the best organizations out there. Don't the Pats have an assistant GM or Asst Pres of football Ops? They've been building depth for years. And I'm not sure about the rules but I don't think they can stop you from interviewing someone for a promotion.

...But then again, an assistant at the pats to top dog at the Redskins might just be a DEmotion.

Re: Who for GM

How about Bruce Allen?

Quote:
Bruce Allen is the former General Manager of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the National Football League from 2004 to 2008.[1] Prior to his stint with the Buccaneers, he was a Senior Executive with the Oakland Raiders from 1996 to 2003.
I believe the Raiders went to a Super Bowl during this period, and the Buccaneers were not bad during his stint there.

Re: Who for GM

Reposted from my other thread: I've been lookin around online and have come up with these 2 guys. Both are young, up-and-coming execs with the Steelers. I'd love to see us build up some stability like the Steelers have through the draft and smart free agent picks. Both these guys were in the running for the KC job (thats where I pulled this from):

1. Ron Hughes (College Scouting Director - Pittsburgh Steelers)

He was the former V.P. Personnel Director of the Detroit Lions and was hired by the Steelers to handle the college scouting duties in 2002. He spent 18 years in Detroit and was credited for helping the Lions compete in the 90’s when the team had Barry Sanders and Herman Moore.

Over the last seven years Hughes has been primarily in charge of building the Steelers drafts and was one of the only people in the organization who championed the cause to move up in the first round of the 2003 draft to grab USC safety Troy Polamalu. The team that made that swap was none other then the Kansas City Chiefs, who used that pick to draft Penn State running back Larry Johnson.

2. Doug Whaley (Pro Personnel Director - Pittsburgh Steelers)

He has worked closely with Hughes, and that might be one of the better personnel teams in all of the NFL. Whaley has spent 11 seasons with the Steelers and according to someone close to the team who spoke with Warpaint Illustrated, he’d like to move up the NFL food chain. However, a year ago he forwarded an e-mail that didn’t exactly warm the hearts of the Steelers and the Commissioners office - it contained immoral photos. So that has been something that has held up his efforts towards obtaining a higher position in the NFL.

Ron Hughes is 66 years old. I wouldn't call him a young, up and comer.

You think we need a young guy for GM, i do like the thought of someone from the steelers though that has to be one of the best run organiztions in the nfl, that said i would love to see dick lebeau come in as gm, he might be a little bit older but i bet he could beat the $ outta have the punk asses we have on our team, and would never back down from ds, and smootsmack what say you about brain kelly for head coach i'd like a college hc or get a cordinator some one in the leauge though not anyone who got fired for losing even though i do like gruden

A young guy would help because he would be here for a while (ideally), but I was saying more so because SkinFanatic called him a young, up and comer. And I was just pointing out that he's not really.

There's no reason to believe Lebeau would ever be a good GM.

A guy like Brian Kelly could succeed but he needs experienced people around him. I don't buy that a college coach can't succeed in the NFL but they need to be surrounded by NFL people. It's like someone from outside the Beltway being President. Of course they can succeed, but they need people with experience on the inside to help them through
