Why do people base their experience on the Spurrier project, that guy didn't have the demeanor to command respect yet even coach a professional team. Harbaugh is a different breed of coach and one day soon will prove it by being hired by a smart NFL team.

Well not just Spurrier, but in general college coaches don't do well in the NFL. Why would we want to try to beat the odds with the problems at the HC position we've had (except for Gibbs 2.0)

USATODAY.com - For college coaches, going pro is full of cons

College coaches rarely succeed in NFL - USATODAY.com

NFL not the ultimate goal for coaches anymore - NFL - ESPN

Those are some old articles. Trust me, if there's one guy who I believe is the real deal in college and will be successful when comes to the NFL, it's "Captain Comeback".

Re: Our next coach??

Zorn needs to go.

I want him out. Without bashing him all night... its better for the team.

Id like to have one of the many top notch Head Coaches available this year and there hasnt been such a good list in awhile.

Lets get back to playing raw smashmouth ball.

Re: Our next coach??

I dont think we will make a big splash for our next HC. It will depend on if VC is still the VP of football here next season, determine if a big name coach will become our HC. I think we may have our next HC already here on our staff. I could see Zorn getting fired and Greg Blache being named the new HC. Sherman Lewis would be the OC and Jackson would move the the DC job. Sometime a small change can lead to a better results. A big name doesnt not mean positive results. We would have to start over with new systems on the offense and defense which could stunt the growth our young 3 amigos are starting to show.

i agree with your main point, we don't need to make a huge splash, but i disagree with blache and lewis, while lewis had helped up out it would seem, i don't wanna to keep these "older" guys around. i would love to see us bring in some youthful guys and build some real continuity to stick with for a long term situation. i honestly don't think blache would eveen take the job anyway, the feeling i get from him is he wants to get out of football and go fishing all day, and sherm lewis already retired once, and i'm guessing he did it for a reason

Re: Our next coach??

We tried the low key approach with Zorn, now I see little to no possibility that we won't be chasing a big name once the season ends. I think we're going to see an entirely different staff next year.

i know thats the sad part, if they would have down a better job finding a low key guy, but not a freakin qb coach we might have been better off, i just hope the staff has some youth to it and i hope they are here for atleast five years

The head coach isn't just responsible for the guys on the field. He's also the face of the franchise and the franchise is a business. And tickets and sponsorship deals need to be sold...so yeah I think it will be a big name as well.

Re: Our next coach??

My very first post so I will try and not embarrass myself. In patrolling several boards and the topic of the next coach, there appears to be one name that continues to be missing.

While I think we can all agree that the front office is a complete farce and the general feeling is that Snyder wants a "name" coach, there seems to be a feeling that the name coaches are kind of saying "no thanks".....Cowher this week, Holmgren and the Hawks/Browns, Gruden and ESPN, etc, etc. The one successful coach that continues to be missing is Mike Martz. I lived in St. Louis when he was the OC and the head coach and the guy was crazy but an excellent coach that produced some very good teams. He turned in fairly successful stints as the OC in Detroit and San Francisco until Mike Singeltary decided on a different offense.

Martz clashed with the front office in STL because of the incompetence of some of the people there. Wilbon has stated several times that he believes Snyder will do one more hire before finally getting things right and getting the right front office structure in place. I personally would take the flier on Martz for his outstanding record as a head coach. Plus, I think he would put the screws to the front office and then finally, maybe, Snyder will realize his errors. Schottenheimer did it and he is the only coach, albeit for 1 season, that Snyder hired that had a .500 or better record with the Skins.

Welcome to the board. Nice first post. Martz also has a history here in Washington. I think he's innovative but maybe not a great choice for a head coach. As I understand it he's clashed nearly everywhere he's gone. Not just St. Louis.

Anyhow, I think Martz is probably a name that will be considered sort of as a back-up option here. But more likely I think his best opportunity to be a head coach would be someplace like Cleveland and Buffalo. But even with all that said, his real value is an offensive coordinator. And I think that's how he will return to the NFL. Could be to one of the teams mentioned, could be to Chicago or somewhere else but I think his best bet is an OC.

welcome to the board. I wouldnt having Martz around as an OC, but i wouldnt want him as a HC... and one fo the reasons is exactly what you mention - it would end up being another Shottenheimer-esque fiasco. Our next head coach needs to be someone who'll actually be able to stick around here for a while.

Honestly, I think Snyder's one and only focus is Shanahan. I think he'll do everything he possibly can to get Shanahan in D.C. I don't think he even has a "plan B" yet and I think that could put us in a bind later on. I fully expect a long and drawn out head coaching search with no changes to the front office structure and a new head coach that leaves all of us feeling disappointed.

Nice initial post, keep it up!! I thought Martz would have been perfect in '08 when we were searching but purely from a football standpoint. He would be calling virtually the same offense we'd been running under Saunders, had success with undersized WR in the past, could have made Portis into more of a threat in the screen/passing game and could have developed Campbell to his strengths. Also, he had a strong relationship with Fletcher on the defensive side so he'd have credibility with the defensive players. I'd wonder how his ego would work with Snyder and Cerrato but on the field it would have been a great fit.

At this point however, I don't think that's a good move. We'd be changing offenses AGAIN, our personnel isn't suited to his style and the front office structure is still broken.

To tell you the truth I think you have it backwards. I don't think the players have bought into this whole WCO scheme and are having trouble with the terminology. I think most are used to the Gibbs/Saunders terminology issue better and to be honest our whole OL is set up for that style of offense. For the WCO to work we need smaller faster more agile OL which we don't have. If we blow this thing up I can only hope that if the next HC comes in and is utilizing the WCO he realizes he needs to drastically pick up OL for this scheme to work. Shanahan will have his work cut out for him.

Re: Our next coach??

We all know Snyder is going to PURSUE a big name HC. The question is, will we find one willing to come here? Right now, Shanahan is the only one who hasnt essentially closed the door 100% on coaching the skins. And I personally don't think Shanahan will come here. So where does that leave us?
