ESPN 30 for 30: Muhammad and Larry
Does anybody else watch this show? I caught it the other night and it was the film about Muhammad Ali vs Larry Holmes world title fight of 1980. The film is made up of previously unreleased footage from 1980 that was filmed during the training camp.
Very, very sad, film. Ali, who was retired for 2 years, was completley and totally shot as a fighter, plus he had parkinsons setting in. Larry Holmes gave him an absolute beating over 10 rounds. I just felt so sad for Muhammad Ali after watching it. He was the only person who believed that he had a chance against Holmes. In the film you see him totally getting whooped in sparring sessions, unable to hit a speed big anymore, and struggling with coordination hitting the heavy bag. This fight should have never have been allowed to take place, and neither should Ali vs. Berbick in 1981. Who knows, Ali might not be so messed up today.
