Portis put on IR, done for '09

I've wondered about this. Is Portis just taking the season off in hopes of a trade or a better Skins team next year? Seems kind of fishy to me that he is still suffering concussion complications this long, (from the hit he took spacifically).

I just seriously doubt he's that injured. I've seen MASSIVE hits far worse than his and those players come back within 1-2 weeks. I am not sure about this, but someone missing what 8 or 9 weeks of the season due to a concussion has got to be extremely rare. He's on IR because he's been ineffective and we have far better options to run the ball. Since Portis has been out we have had a spark on offense. I like Portis, but we all pointed out that he seemed to have "lost a step"...he has a lot of miles on those legs, maybe it's time to part ways...especially with what we are paying him.

Come on - It sounded like his vision was blurry and he went to see a specialist. I trust him and I think he plays his heart out. I would NOT question his heart. Seeing plays on TV is different than playing the game.

Second, I still think we should not have ever traded for him in the first place. Would have loved to keep Bailey, a Hall-of-Famer, if he would have stayed. Colossal mistake, and we also gave up a 2nd (?) round pick. Portis was great, but (1) Shut-down corners are much harder to find. (2) RB's careers are much shorter (as we're seeing now).

I hope Portis is okay and wish him the best. But time for a new *young* RB in the draft (after offensive line).

I don't share this opinion, but I suppose I can understand the sentiment. The problem is, Champ wasn't going to return to Washington, he didn't want to be here. He said as much pretty often during that offseason and into the next season. Also, the 2nd round pick ended up being Tatum Bell, so let's not get too bent out of shape.

About the larger topic: I'll be sad if Clinton Portis is forced to retire. I've always liked the guy and enjoyed watching him run the football for this team. I'm bothered by people questioning his toughness. He's shown us nothing other than his willingness to compete and lay it all on the line on Sundays. People say, "he threw his teammates/coach under the bus," well, you know what, maybe the guy wanted to win. I didn't care for it when he did it, but it turned out he was probably correct about what he was saying.

Yeah, the guy was a diva, but he always brought it on Sundays. He was pretty much the only reason this team made the playoffs in 2005 and 2007. He put the Skins on his back and he took them there.

Tom Jackson made a very accurate statement earlier in the season when he said, "You see it all the time...running backs get to a certain age and we see them start to age in dog years." At the time he was referring to Ladanian Tomlinson, but I think the same could be said for Clinton Portis. He looked like his skills may have fallen off of the cliff this year. I believe he'd still be able to show flashes of brilliance, but he'll never be the guy he was in Denver or the guy he was in 05 or 07. For that, I believe the Skins should let him go and, if he wants to continue playing, he should do so elsewhere. He's earned the right to not be benched in Washington, IMO.

That said, I hope he walks away. I would really like to see him retire as a Redskin and I would like to think that he'd consider his health before a paycheck. He should have plenty of money, anyway and, from what he's said in some of these articles, I believe he will retire rather than risk further injury.

First, while I do understand what supposedly occured with the doctors, no, I do not believe him. I think the skins made it clear they don't want him back, and he is now disheartened to the team and what's the point of coming back when the team isn't going anywhere? He gets paid regardless. Again, who do you know misses 8 weeks of the season with a concussion? It just doesn't happen. Some day we will be aware of what is REALLY happening cause we all know Portis is a big mouth.
Second, your second point is true, and a lot of us felt that way when it happened, but man that was a LOOOONG time ago and Portis did well for us for a while, he's just done now.

Man look, let Portis compete in training camp next year for the starting spot. I think he would win. I believe in him and think he had an off year and has atleast two or three more 1400 yard seasons in him. Emmitt Smith lost some of his explosiveness, but still played 7 more years.

Fact: Portis hates preseason. However this is the time for players to get back into football shape, learn the plays, and build cohesiveness with teamates. Portis belives it's over rated.

Fact: It takes 2-4 games before Portis is even playing at the level he should be playing at. Mostly due to his lack of preseason playing time.

Fact: Portis is getting older. As well as Betts and Rock. All, if they had it, are losing their elusiveness.

Fact: Portis doesn't like something he runs to Daddy Snyder and all is made well. Not something you want from a team player.

Fact: He's had his injuries mostly in these last few years. Which is a part of getting old.

Fact: Some idiot gave him a huge player friendly contract. If there is no CAP this year coming up we would be wise to get rid of his contract. As well with all the others...ie; Samuels.

Fact: He has not run the same the last 3 years. Originally he was a shifty RB. Brought in and asked to gain weight by Gibbs to become his power back. To only decide after Gibbs he wanted to lose the weight to try and get back to his elusiveness, which has not worked out for him. He's a better power between the tackles type of runner. Now with his concussion he might not even be worth keeping for that roll cause they take some hits in the trenches.

Fact: He should simply find a way to cut bait and turn to being a media guys somewhere. ESPN, NFL network, maybe Reskins Nation especially since I don't watch that anymore he might bring people back to watching the show if he simply did interviews with players on the field or in the locker room or while working out.

In this "what have you done for me lately" age of football, it never ceases' to amaze me how some people can so easily discredit and verbally humiliate players that have for the most part, done good things for the team. Players that when things are going well receive posivite vibes, when things go awry the tide turns.

I have always had issues with Portis, from his practice habits to his lack of pre-season participitation and controversial issues as well. Aside from those things, when it was time to play and he was on the field, he always gave his best effort and that's all you can ask of any player.
