Portis put on IR, done for '09

I never, ever, had an issue with Portis as far as the athlete is concerned. I will say from 2004-2006 he gave us everything he had. The 2006 season when he was put on IR changed him i think. He became bitter and started sitting out practices. 2008 we really saw him hit the wall physically, and he was on the downhill. People didn't want to admit it. This year, 2009, Portis had absolutley NOTHING left...he played hard and with heart, but his body is broken down after so much abuse and injuries.

His attitude was always an issue here. It was well documented in news articles that Moss was the only player who consistantly had his back. He lost alot of fans when he threw Zorn under the bus last year along with everyone else. He lost player support this year when he mouthed off to Sellars after talking about him behind his back for weeks.

Sure Portis wants to win, blah blah blah....but it's no excuse to take it out on others. I would bet anything Portis, with his gigantic ego, cares more about getting Riggo's record, than any team success. I am not alone in that belief.

That said. Good luck to Portis and his future. I think he will find few suitors in the NFL to give him the money he's used to, plus not make him work out or practice. I dare say his career could go the way of Shaun Alexander's (how ironic, since Portis was so jealous of him)...Best Wishes

Portis had known issues with Alexander. It was well publicised and documented. Infact, When Alexander ran onto the field last year because Portis had an equipment problem, Portis got very mouthy and kind of "pouted" about it.

This also led to when Portis "took himself out" of the game last year, which Zorn got angry about...which led to Portis telling Zorn to "Get the F out of my face". (covered by nearly all news outlets).

You seem to completley ignore issues of Portis' attitude or character. I am only reporting the facts on CP that most others on the board have experienced, or read about. Its kind of been hard to miss the waves that Portis has made here over the last few years...

It has always been difficult for most athletes in most sports to be able to admit to themselves the fact they don't have it any more. They hang on long after their productive years, some to the point of public embarassment because their mind and body are not in tune with one another.

If the Redskins are willing to continue paying Portis for his limited production and poor work habits, then I can't blame him for trying to stick around. It will be worth watching to see how the team intends to proceed with his case going foreward. Without a doubt there is probbably a better bang for the buck.

I'd say he probably got tired of being a blocking power back. He'd allude to that as well saying things like (paraphrased) "I don't get hurt running the ball, my injuries have come from blocking and tackling guys on turnovers, if they want me to be healthier they can have me stop doing those things"

I think that it says a lot how well he worked out for us considering the type of switch that he had to do and that he still went and gave it 100% on his blocks. The question is how much longer can he work out for us? I don't think that we cut him unless we see in preseason that he can't do it.

Ok guys, I've figured it out. There is a huge conspiracy going on. It sounds like our DR. cleared him but he has to get an outside source per the NFL requesting 2 sources and one being not associated with the team.

Here's the conspiracy.......Portis went to NY to see a specialist. Think....think....we play our second game with NY within the next 4 weeks. Ta Da!

Hey Smoot thanks for posting the articles.

I remember when Portis seemed all happy about Shaun Being here. But it was like his attitude quickly changed.

The second article was a good read. But with all the coverage of that incident, and even Larry Michael talking about it, maybe we all misinterpreted it. But i sure saw the words "Get the F out of my face" on TV. My father in law saw the same thing....

I agree with that post completley. I never, ever, questioned Portis' athletic ability. NO doubt in my mind he always gave 100%, even when his body was operating at only 40% capacity.

But he shouldnt come back next season if the injury is this serious. A 30 year old runningback with major mileage, big injury history, and coming off a potential career-ending concussion. Even Portis, who is madly in pursuit of his own stats, hopefully has enough common sense to not risk his future life and/or health just so he can pass Riggins' record and then retire.

Only way is if he would take a secondary role...but i doubt he'd ever do that.

all i know about Portis is that when he takes the field, its 150%. i really don't give a damn about practice. we are talking about practice, right? im not sure why you guys care so much about practice. if he goes out, and tweeks a knee, missing a game, then what? he has been with the skins long enough to know whats expected of him. for a seasoned pro, whats the big deal?

oh yeah, practice, CP, Allen Iverson & Plaxico. Those guys don't need practice!

the part I bolded says it all; Gibbs may have created this dysfunction by allowing CP to get away w/a lot. But Zorn & most any coach that wants to keep their job EXPECTS their players to practice! During practice, they perform such perfunctory tasks as game planning & conditioning.

I'd agree with your statement 100% if the other backs would have came out and ran worse than Portis did (which would be hard to do)

But they didn't, because they practiced and had rhythym with the team, something Portis did not have this year at all. Practice makes you better, its a proven fact. In the NFL, even "Seasoned Pros" practice. Seriously...there are not many teams that would let you get by with refusing to practice. And did you seriously see the shape Portis was in this year? He looked paunchy in the media photos and even other people noticed how out of shape he was...I'm sure that didnt help him on the field any.
