My first thought was, "oh no", but I think there's a lot of assuming going on and I'm open to seeing how they want to use our personell. I don't think we'll go straight 3-4 and I certainly don't think our previous DC used our guys to the best of their ability.

Re: Haslett to accept Defensive Coordinator

The thing about personnel is that we're no worse suited for the 3-4 than we are for the 4-3 right now. The key is whether or not Haslett is a guy who simply wants to impliment the 3-4, or whether he can actually call it. If he can call it, we can absolutely play it.

In either defense, we need an extra linebacker and more DT depth. And our secondary still kind of blows, but it's not a lost cause, I don't think. There's players in it that you can win with. Maybe even Hall.

First priority is still the offense. Free agency should be adequate for filling those holes in the front seven.

History shows us that Shanahan hasn't got a clue when it comes to hiring DCs.

I don't get it ... why don't people think AH is a good fit for NT? He's 6'6" 300+ lbs ... seems good to me.

Seems like a complete waste of his talents to me. The NT's job is to just clog. AH has the talent to do more than clog...he's got a 100 mil contract to show for THOSE talents...not the ability to clog.

I like Haslett, my only concern with his aggressiveness is that it makes the defense vulnerable to the "big play", such as sending an all out blitz and paying for it by having a bomb thrown down field. I have seen that a lot in his years of coaching.

Its a trade-off. If you want to be aggressive, you're going to give up some big plays here and there... unless, of course, your dbs consist of Derrell Revis, Nnamdi Asomugha, Troy Polamalu, and Ed Reed. The only essentially eliminate the big play, is to be very "passive." The problem with Blache was that we WERE passive, yet we still have up the big play. Still, if we had had an even average offense, we would have won A LOT more games this year and been in the playoffs. Our defense let us down at some critical points, but overall, they did their job the vast majority of the time.

That said, I certainly think guys like Haynesworth, Orakpo, and Landry will benefit from a more aggressive system.

Do you think there's anyone on our team who is suited to play NT right now?

I think more than anyone it could go to Daniels. He's not nearly a big fat guy like a lot of top NTs but he does possess the strength and fundamentals for it. Griff seems a little too small. I guess montgomery comes to mind also. He's got the size but it is a hard working position and Monty isn't known as a hard worker. Signing Wilfork sounds like the best option if we really are switching to a base 3-4.

Well, there's this guy who used to play for us back when it wasn't a requirement that you play your college ball in the SEC to play DT for the Redskins.

He's not an every down player, I don't think, but if you want to bring in a veteran to rotate at the position with him, he'll play well in the scheme.

I probably agree, but it's hard to say that's reason for avoiding the 3-4. Maybe we don't get to use AH's talents with him as a NT, but maybe doing that opens up opportunities for the rest of our defense. Basically, if our defense is better, I don't care what AH wants or whether we're fully using his talents. It's all about net-gain.

I agree. Haynesworth could certainly play NT and be very good at it... it would just be a waste of his talent. If Shanahan lives up to his word at adjusting schemes to fit the talent, we will do one of two things:

1) trade Haynesworth (for nothing less than the equivalent of a 1st round pick in 2010 and 2011)

2) Stick with a 4-3 base defense

Or how about you just mix in some 3-4 looks now and then?
