Quarterbacks – West Virginia's Jarrett Brown has put on a show this week. His quick release reminds me a lot of Philadelphia Eagles' quarterback Michael Vick's. He snaps the ball in his delivery with terrific velocity and a tight spiral. While he may need some development to become capable of starting in the NFL, Brown certainly has the talent needed to do so. You could definitely argue that Brown is a better pocket passer than his former teammate Pat White was when he entered the draft last year. With team's becoming more athletic in the NFL, Brown should find a home in the middle of the draft. |

Seriously, where you see the red flag? Since when is having a quick release and a near text book throwing motion a bad thing? I see a red flag with your post, lol You realize that the comparison was of their releases? |

Re: Late Round Gems
Having a QB compared in the passing department to Michael Vick for me is the red flag. The quick release and throwing motion are fine. I would think of an analogy but I can't think of one right now.

Re: Late Round Gems
Doesn't matter how quick it is when a little under half the time he misses the target. So no I don't believe Vick has a good release in a game situation. Now if you want to impress a scout with how much velocity you can put on a football then fine he has an amazing release, but it's like getting a rocket launcher without a targeting system.
THERE'S YOUR ANALOGY!! Only took half a month. Anyway I will never respect a true mobile QB until they can put up respectable passing numbers. Most of the mobile QB's that have become successful almost always evolved into pocket passers; Steve Young, McNabb, McNair, heck even Cunningham eventually reached his peak when he became a pocket passer. In the end the fact remains, a football travels much faster down the field then any QB can run.

I would get Stull from Pitt before I would draft Brown. Too many great under the radar QBs that we could pick up with killer stats and good moves to boot. Sheehan, Lefevour, Pike, Kafka, even Canfield from Oregon St would be better prospects than Brown. Brown is talented for sure, but the true gunslingers are the ones that make the most impact in the NFL. |

BTW-here's another tidbit on Brown: Draft Countdown's Senior Bowl Coverage - 1/27/10 South Practice Report • Today West Virginia’s Jarrett Brown had the best performance by a quarterback that I’ve seen so far this week. That isn’t necessarily saying a whole lot though… Once again Brown showcased his strong arm and while he tends to make his receivers work for the catch he was solid in 7-on-7’s. Brown also displayed nice touch and accuracy on a fade round. Brown is still raw but he should be a nice mid-round pick for someone as a developmental signal caller. |

Re: Late Round Gems
01/28/2010 - SENIOR BOWL RISER: QB Jarrett Brown, West Virginia: For all of the hype that Tim Tebow received this week, Brown was consistently the South's best quarterback. He had only one season as the starter after serving behind Pat White, but has the arm-strength and accuracy worthy of development. - Rob Rang, The Sports Xchange, NFLDraftScout.com
01/27/2010 - Senior Bowl, Tuesday: With all of the talk about Tebow, some people may not have noticed that the ball flat-out jumps off the hand of West Virginia quarterback Jarrett Brown. His accuracy was not deadly, but he gave tight ends running down the seams and receivers on the sideline every opportunity to make a play. Brown is still working on getting the ball from under center and is stiff in his drop. His solid arm and ability as a runner, however, bodes well for his future as a playmaker at the next level. - Rob Rang and Chad Reuter, The Sports Xchange, NFLDraftScout.com Jarrett Brown, , NFL Draft - CBSSports.com - NFLDraftScout.com Scout.com: Senior Bowl Q&A: QB Jarrett Brown By Ed Thompson Scout.com Senior NFL Analyst Posted Jan 29, 2010 | More While Florida's Tim Tebow had the majority of the media huddled around him at the end of Wednesday's South Team practice, Scout.com's Ed Thompson focused his attention on the quarterback who was delivering the best results on the field during the practice sessions--West Virginia's Jarrett Brown. Ed Thompson: Jarrett, I've been very impressed by your pocket presence this week. Jarrett Brown: I've always had a knack for it. I was always a pure passer. Some people think I've always been a running quarterback, but I didn't get my speed until I got to college. I feel comfortable under the center and dropping back and just sitting in the pocket. Thompson: You putting some zip on your passes and you look like you're getting your timing down with this all-star cast of receivers. Brown: Yeah, you know that first day, my head was kind of spinning a bit. But now I'm getting to know the plays inside out and getting great anticipation on the routes. So I'm able to throw a nicer and more relaxed ball. Thompson: As you're meeting with these NFL teams, what is it that you want them to know about you as a person? Brown: I really just want them to know who I am, just the real me, Jarrett Brown. Thompson: Tell me about your family and the role they've played in helping you get here today. Brown: My family is everything, I wouldn't be here without my family. I'm the youngest in the family. I grew up in West Palm Beach and had all these great guys who pointed me in the right direction. I just didn't want to fail them. Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images Thompson: I know that all the fans and the media are going nuts over Tim Tebow, but you've been the best quarterback out here so far this week. I like your poise, the energy level you're bringing to your team, and your execution. Brown: Thank you. Thompson: Talk a bit about working with Pat White until he moved on to the Miami Dolphins last year. Have you talked to him at all about what you'll be experiencing in the coming months? Brown: I haven't talked to him about the Senior Bowl, but I have talked to him about his experience with the Dolphins organization. This is a great coaching staff. They kind of remind me of the West Virginia staff. They are great people, the kind of people I want to work with. Pat came back to school and started showing me some things. And sure enough, the coach here said something to me about one of those things, so it was great that Pat had already told me. Thompson: I know you've met with plenty of NFL teams, but who are just a few of the ones you've talked to so far? I'm sure the fans back in West Virginia would like to hear about that. Brown: Mostly all of them. I really appreciate the support from |

Re: Late Round Gems
Travis Ivey DT/NT 6'4 341
http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings...2010&genpos=DT Quote: 02/16/2010 - PRO POTENTIAL: DL Travis Ivey - Another Terrapin who battled injuries during his college career, Ivy started the final 16 games of his tenure in College Park. He'll get a look at the next level with a strong performance at the NFL Combine, and was set to play in the Texas vs. the Nation game on Feb. 6. 02/04/2010 - Texas vs. the Nation, Wednesday: Maryland nose tackle Travis Ivey measured in at 6-foot-4, 341 pounds this week. He looked strong in the middle and rejected a pass with his 10-plus inch hands in Wednesday's practice. Andre Neblett (Temple) is a smaller player (6-0, 297) who displayed hustle and strength inside all week as a pass rusher. - Chad Reuter, The SportsXchange, NFLDraftScout.com Travis Ivey, DT, Maryland Quote: Maryland's Profile for Travis Ivey Overview Travis Ivey started all 12 games as a senior at DT and received an invite to the Texas vs. Nation all-star game. Ivey stayed healthy his senior year after battling leg and foot injuries earlier in his collegiate career. Didn't start playing football until his junior year of HS, as he was a basketball player prior to that. Strengths Ivey has excellent size and above-average athleticism for the NT position. He's a space eater with the strength to hold position well. Has exceptional lower-body strength to anchor and drive. Athletic player with good explosiveness to be disruptive in the backfield. Can shoot the gap. Has long arms and is adept at knocking down passes. Weaknesses Inconsistent player who really hasn't shown the production that a player with his skills should. He's more than just a space eater, yet he struggles to make plays. He doesn't play with an attitude and seems content to just push people around without an intent to get to the ball. Had trouble earning a starting position prior to senior season. Really needs to be coached up and motivated. Projection With more teams playing a 3-4, he'll get some attention with his size and athleticism, but his lack of production and motivation will keep him from being a high draft pick. Look for him to hear his name in the second half of day 3 of the 2010 NFL Draft. He'll need some time with good coaching before he can be a productive NFL player, but he could get there if he sets his mind to it. Quote: Maryland:....Also at defensive tackle for Maryland is Travis Ivey. The coaches raved about his improved play and leadership during the spring, and the offensive line was having a tough time containing him. But he got a concussion in the fourth week and missed the rest of the spring. He also had a scheduled shoulder surgery at the end of the spring. ^^May 21 http://espn.go.com/blog/ncfnation/ta...me/travis-ivey nEXT: Roy Upchurch and Chris Brown |

Yeah, we don't need another Vick in the NFL. How many of these option/athletic/running star Qbs have won a SB? None. Randal Cunningham was great to watch, but didn't win jack at Philly, ditto with McNabb(at least he went to a SB), and now Vick. You want a mobile guy that can get out of trouble, but not necessarily a QB/RB type. The only SB winning QB that was a really good runner was Steve Young. |

BTW-If you measure a QB only by wether or not they win the SB you're discrediting many great QBs like Marino, Kelly, Moon etc Quote:
This thread is about late round gems, which might be a moot point as Brown continues to impress and move up the draft boards. Quote:
I say this because you've basically been downing him ever since the first time i mentioned him. I've said and other posters have said that Brown is not a 'running QB' but you persist in refering to him as such. I wonder what your opinion is of Colt McCoy? |

He isn't a running QB, but one of those guys that will hesitate as to whether he should take off with it. That is what killed Vick in Atlanta in my opinion. ALso when was the last time a Mountaineer made good in the NFL? Major Harris was a real talent also at WVU, didn't do much in the pros though. |
