Re: Portis expected to be back

Either way we have to pay him, since economics have no bearing on him staying or going, we may as well see if we can get any more out of him. Even that is going to depend on how hard he's willing to work, to get in shape and be the ultimate team player.

If Shanahan decides to keep him here, he'll be a changed man.

this is what i dont understand. CP is set to make over 10 mil / year for the next 3 years. if we cut him this year, his guaranteed money owed for the next 3 years will be absorbed in 2010 and he will not effect our cap past 2010.

the only downside is that dan snyder is going to have to pay a ton of money to CP this year for a player not even on our team. thats what i think gtripp was referring to i think. the benefit is CP's contract will be cleared off the books after 2010, when there will be a cap.

dont confuse CP still getting paid by dan snyder and CP's pay effecting the cap. there are two options as i see it:

1) cut CP in uncapped year, have all of his future guaranteed money paid in 2010 and he is off the books after that. sucks for dan snyder to have to pay all that money in 2010 to a player not on your team but maybe dan snyder and vinny shouldnt have restructured CPs contract so many times by converting future salary (unguarnateed) into future guaranteed money but atleast we added some cap space in '07, right.

2) dont cut CP, pay him over 10 mil for the next 3 years. this wouldnt be a problem this year with no cap but if the cap comes back in 2011 and 2012, do you really want to pay portis over 10 mil 2-3 years from now? with it counting against the cap? when you could have just taken a large hit to dan snyders pocket in the uncapped year and be done with it?

No problem, because we'll definitely be getting our money's worth from him in 2011.

Based on the Warpath Cap Sheets, Portis is scheduled to make $ 10.1M in salary this year (I believe it's about 7.9M in salary and a roster bonus of $ 2.1M). If he's cut before the roster bonus is due, he would have been an $ 8.4M cap penalty. The net cap savings of cutting Portis would have been $ 1.7M.

In an uncapped year there are no cap penalties, so cutting Portis saves $ 10.1M of salary. As far as I know Portis was already paid all his signing bonus money and has nothing else guaranteed.

If I'm missing something, I'm sure one of our cap folks will let us know.

If this is true, and I suspect it is, Portis has his work cut out for him. WalterFootball has Javid Best dropping to us in the second round. That would be worth considering if he does.

^ I will leap for joy if we get Jahvid Best. Quick and agile, he could thrive in Shanny's one-cut system. And with his speed, he could give us a real home run threat.

after your post a did a good bit of reading.

CP is guaranteed roughly 9.8 mil in 2010. guaranteed approx. 2.3ish mil in 2011 and 2012.

if we cut CP now, he will be owed approx. 15 mil (9.8ish + 2.3ish + 2.3ish + a 2010 roster bous of approx 500k). but he is off the books for 2011 and 2012.

also the skins cleverly did an "off set" clause in CPs renegotiated contract which means that if CP is cut, the money owed to him from the skins is reduced ( a percent, not dollar for dollar) if he signs with another team.

the skins were also smart to take that 9.8 mil signing bonus on in 2010, which they correctly predicted was going to be an uncapped year.

if CP is cut in 2011 or 2012; we go back to the normal equation of (salary - guar = cap space saved). so 8 mil - 2.3 mil = cap savings of 5.7mil.

in conclusion, cutting CP now will save us approx 2.3 mil per year in cap space for 2011 and 2012 vs just keeping the man for 1 more year and dan snyder gets something in return for his money in 2010.

with that off set clause, it might just be worth it to keep him next year, run him hard and see if he can turn things around.

if he sucks or doesnt change his approach, cut him after 2010 and all we lost out on is 2.3 mil extra in cap savings which would be off set by any other team signing him.
