Speaking of football IQ.... Landry has none.

He has the mental capacity of a gerbil.

Thats why he needs to move closer to the line, that way he wont be getting beat on double moves.

Re: Landry is now a bust!

Playing outside his natural position is not the problem w/ Landry. His issues are the following:

1) Cannot consistently tackle...often missing his "target" by several feet EVEN when playing close to the LOS.

2) Sometimes avoiding contact altogether. The notion Laron is a big hit, big play guy is the biggest myth in Redskins history. He plays scared part of the time, which is a mortal sin in football, not to mention the safety position.

3) He regularly makes huge costly mistakes, like blatant and cowardly cheap shots, which brings shame to the team and the sport in general.

4) His behavior has been ridiculous...the extended celebrating and antics after making a routine play.

5) At the end of the day to be a great safety you have to put the fear of God into WRs and RBs and create turnovers...Landry does neither. He has a tiny handful of turnovers in his career and I bet if you took a poll not a single player in the game would say Landry is intimidating.

I'll be very disappointed in the new regime if Landry is retained.

And for the sake of all that is decent please don't anyone ever try to draw comparison between Landry and Sean beyond the fact they both played in Washington.

Goat, i agree with all of your points. i've felt Landry was mis-used for a long time, but he makes many of the same mistakes even when he's playing SS. Since Steve Jackson is staying, i really think Landry will be retained, although he shouldnt be.

I think if Ed Reed retires, we should try to trade Landry to the Ravens. I'm sure his brother would push hard for it with the coaching staff there. I'd ask for a 3rd, but i'd take a 4th.

Lol..You guys really think Landry will be cut or traded after 3yrs...Not going to happen

Playing him at SS is like playing Orakpo at LB, doesnt make much sense..

He was chosen in the Top 10 for a reason, hes talented, speed, size and bigplay ability.

He needs to be coached up, he got worse as the team got worse, & the coaching got

worse.

I've been saying all along that we should wait and see what a different coach would do for Landry -- but then they retained safeties coach Steve Jackson.

Oh well, maybe Haslett can set him straight.

Re: Landry is now a bust!

Landry is not a bust.
He had a down year with a couple of bad games.
As with everything else Redskins related alot of people are over reacting.

2-3 Bad games doesn't out weigh an 3 year career.

Landry certainly has many areas to improve.

His work ethic and focus and his overall commitment to being a great player.
Meaning being a leader, coming to offseason activities, watching film.

Also, i think one of his biggest problems is that he's bulked up too much.
I think if he slimmed down much like ST21 did in his final season he would be better able to command center field as a FS.
Agility and change of direction and quickness are all more important then bulk in a modern FS especially one that plays alot of single deep.

Modern FS need to be able to move like CB look at the body type of some of the good ones Darren Sharper, Bethea, Ed Reed, Jarius Byrd.

Come in to camp slim and trim ready with better focus and more dedication to becoming a great player and a better leader.

LOL! So true.

Landry will be fine. We desperately needed a coaching staff that can develop and mentor players. Not the past Ceratto created staff that was under performing.
I am hoping the new staff will correct the technique and tendency issues that Landry, Rogers and few others in the secondary have. Over time this can be corrected.
Before this past season Landry throughout his career has been an above average safety. No reason to believe last season was not an aberration.

Re: Landry is now a bust!

There was a time when #21 was getting negative criticism like Landry is now. Maybe Landry, like Taylor, will mature, "get it," and become a force.

Re: Landry is now a bust!

Im going to admit it. Laron Landry is my FAVORITE current Washington Redskin. I am his biggest supporter and it hurt me far more than any of you to see him struggle this year. Yes, he had an off year, but so did EVERY SINGLE REDSKIN! Our whole team had an off year, we went 4-12 for christ sake. This is how im going to present it, 2010 could be Landry's Breakout year but the following things need to happen. He needs to be moved back to SS. You guys make it sound like he played regularly in college @ FS, but that is a complete fabrication, he def did not. He played there sparingly. If he was a FS in college, i highly doubt he would have been a 1st round pick, let alone a top 10 pick. If you watch his old game film or even highlights, you will see he made his impact near the line of scrimmage. He would take on OLineman, put a helmet right into the FB, he would cause a LOT of problems in the backfield and thats why we drafted him. He's also a superior blitzer. He led LSU in SACKS! as a SS! Thats why we drafted him, he's a great athlete who causes problems for other teams. Haslett's defense as been described as agressive, n i really hope that they are smart enough to use him to his MAX effectiveness. Good coaches make a scheme that caters to their players STRENGTHS. So if we limit the space Landry has to occupy, keep him close to the line, and blitz him regularly then he can reach his fully potential! You want a feared safety? Ask ppl who had to deal with him in the box. Ask Kerry Collins after he smashed him in that 1st preseason game. Ask those college QB's that took devestating hits because of his blitz's. Guarantee if we use him like the QB's will always be spotting him before the snap to make sure hes not coming. This is not Cerrato/Snyder show anymore guys. We dont do stupid trades. You think we should trade a former Top 10 pick that hasnt been given the proper time to reach his full potential and who still has ALOT of youth on his side away? We have a NEW regime in place to specifically NOT make anymore stupid personnel moves. This thread is a waste.

Re: Landry is now a bust!

freshman year he played most games at free safety
sophomore all 12 games at free safety
junior all 13 games at free safety
senior I believe every game free safety as well

I don't know how much they moved him around, but that's where he started the games at.. I wouldn't be surprised if they moved him closer to the line on certain downs though, probably where most of his highlights come from

senior year he came back a bit bigger and they say he lost a step.. do I think that he's better suited for SS? most likely

but that doesn't mean that he was a strong safety at LSU, I think he started maybe ONE game at SS there.. by that, he should be a cornerback since he also started at game at that position

Re: Landry is now a bust!

I read somewhere, sorry can't remember where, I think the Redskin site, that he would play closer to the line this season. Sometimes even resembling a LB. I hope that's the case.

Sorry to crap on your mancrush, but this thread is far from a waste. Sure Laron is athletic, but contrary to what you said, he has had plenty of time to reach his potential. He's moving in the wrong direction. He's regressing for sure. Yeah, he's a good blitzer, but that's about it. He's AWFUL at tackling, always goes for the blow up hit instead of wrapping up, and he's so bad in coverage. He bites on pump fakes like they're cheesecake. Plus he's a hot head and is good for multiple bonehead personal fouls every year.

He's my LEAST favorite defensive player, and next to Portis he's probably my least favorite Redskin.
