Redskins make it official -- 10 are gone, 10 are tendered
Posted by Mike Florio on March 4, 2010 7:51 PM ET
As the dust begins to settle on a hectic day of guys getting tendered or fired, the Redskins have issued an official report on their flurry of activity.

A whopping 10 players have been released: running back Ladell Betts, running back Rock Cartwright (Cartwright!), quarterback Todd Collins, defensive tackle Cornelius Griffin, running back Marcus Mason, receiver Antwaan Randle El, defensive lineman J.D. Skolnitsky, cornerback Fred Smoot, guard Randy Thomas, and fullback Eddie Williams.

The following tenders have been applied: quarterback Jason Campbell (first round), cornerback Carlos Rogers (first round), safety Reed Doughty (second round), defensive lineman Kedric Goltson (second round), tackle Stephon Heyer (second round), linebacker Rocky McIntosh (second round), linebacker Chris Wilson (second round), defensive tackle Anthony Montgomery (fifth round), offensive lineman Will Montgomery (seventh round), and linebacker Lorenzo Alexander (right of first refusal).

At first I was happy. My happiness is quickly becoming fear. Wow, they are blowing up the roster. Oh well, go Shanahan. Finally a realist.

Well we need this, as I said over the past couple of years we kept people, and kept paying without any dividends. This team needed to be blown up a long time ago.

Fear of what....?

Are you really surprised at even one name that got the axe?

All but maybe Griff have already over extended there stay in DC IMO.

If anything they are cleaning up the books to get a few real football players in here. This is a good start.

This is exactly what Allen did in Tampa...cut overpaid vets, brought in 19 new younger and cheaper, but good players...went to the Super Bowl.

I have faith in him, he's won in this league before.

I'm thrilled that Collins was cut. ARE also, but I didn't think it would actually happen.

I am not really surprised at any of them. We should have traded Betts in 2007 when his value was peaking. Randy Thomas should really follow in Samuels' footsteps and retire while his health is intact. Smoot is just finished.

All of the players have been great Redskins and I'm proud of what they've done in the past, but these moves are necessary. We have stuck with the same core for many years and haven't improved. Blowing it up after a 4-12 season is our best bet to return to success.

Agreed. A lot of people around here were iffy on Bruce Allen when he first got here, but it's apparent in the first couple of days that there's been a regime change around here. It's all about process, process, process. I love it!

On another note, I wouldn't be surprised to see Jake Delhomme get a look here if he doesn't sign somewhere else.

It's also very apparent that Snyder is not in the process other than writing the checks. Allen stated yesterday that "ownership has not put a spending limit on us"...yet we're not going out and immediately paying everyone more than they're worth.

As I suspected, Vinny WAS the source of the issue, yet Snyder took most of the blame because he signed the checks. I know Snyder was the meddling, fantasy football-minded owner in the early years, but I truly believed he's learned from his mistakes and moved on from his stereotype around the league and media.

Allen and Shanahan are in total control of the show.

Firing Vinny will prove to be the best thing Snyder EVER did, even if he did it a few years late.

I hope not but I'll trust the brains of the team.

He would definitely not be our starter anyways. Pennington IS reportedly on the radar.

I'd prefer to build up the line and RB/LB through the draft without picking a QB, keep Campbell starting, pick up a solid backup like Pennington and continue to let Brennan develop. I just can't trust him as the backup YET and really think Colt's career ceiling is "quality backup", not a starter...but at this point, Colt is still our backup of the future.

Exactly. IMO a few others need to follow.

They cut Eddie Williams.

Another sign they're making room for Peyton Hillis.

I like it. these guys needed to go. No time to have any personal feelings towards any of the players on our roster. This is going to be a newly built football team not a bunch of Gibbs leftovers. New blood is much needed at redskins park.
