If by people, you mean myself and like one or two others, then yes.

He could still return on a 4th year player minimum contract, but as far as backup nose tackles go, they probably have a free agency or draft target in mind. Montgomery will drift on to New Orleans, and all will be right in the world.

very happy with the cuts so far. I'm still holding out a small glimmer of hope that CP will get the axe. I understand there's no financial reason to do so, but i think he's a cancerous player and cutting him would be a nice, symbolic gesture that things are changing.

Essentially, that's the decision. If the roster spot he vacates has more value to the team than Portis being here does, it would be nonsensical to not cut him a check and move on. If Portis has any positive residual value that you couldn't replace with an undrafted free agent, then we should keep him.

And that's a tough call completely honestly. He may not have any value with the ball in his hands, but his blocking alone could justify his roster spot.
