Owens can become a model football player than why not LJ. I think he just really wanted out of KC so he became a distraction. He from the DC area and he has alot to prove this year. I say lets wait and see how this plays out before we make a determination. We just dont have enough picks to draft a RB this year so we needed a veteran to back up Portis if he gets a season ending injury. LJ is the big brusing back we need to wear down defenses in the NFC East. I hope LJ gets off this season. 2 good backs are a must now.

I think LJ has a good three years left in the tank, if you consider the amount of carries he has, which is 1421. Put that in this perspective: that's less than what Riggo had when Riggo first "retired".

Re: Redskins Sign Larry Johnson

This is how I feel...I am a Gibbs guy and hate guys with attitude problems...but keep in mind he dealt with Riggo...anyways...that is nothing compaired to abuse...I dont know anything about that...so I will assume the best...that it is not true and that LJ just has attitude issues....
If so, who is suprised? this is Shanny's MO.

Bottom line question....is Larry Johnson a greater threat on the field as a backup or is Betts?

I don't think you will get much of an argument there...has anyone ever had Betts on their Fantasy Football team? ....NOT!

And the other point made...which is obviously beutiful...we have 5 picks...we want at least 1 starting Oline guy, a quality QB and a safety...not to mention a LB perhaps and others that fit a 3-4. That doesn't leave jack squat for RB.

Think of it this way....if you honestly thought Parker, LT and LJ , etc would be available without trade cost at the beginning of the year, you'd be crazy. I know they are getting older and have declined, but I don't buy it. Many of these guys are historical studs and at least a couple of them will continue to do damage....more damage than Betts could ever do. I just don't like his ethics issues....just get used to it. This aint Gibbs team anymore, Shanny hires guys with records.

I am on the fence, but objectively, he makes the team better as a backup RB.

Chris Harris pretty much brushed the signing away

Hopefully he will be good and put the baggage he left behind in KC!

Re: Redskins Sign Larry Johnson

People exaggerate the whole locker room thing. I don't think his locker room presence is going to be a distraction at all. He's not gonna be 'the man' here. With CP, Santana, and Cooley around, hes not the only probowl level guy on the squad.
As for how i feel about him being here? I'm totally okay with it. I'm one of the guys that was bangin my head agaisnt the wall when Spurrier let go of Steven Davis. We NEED a tough guy that can pound away at weaker d-lines and isn't as fumble prone as Sellers. I wouldn't want him to get 300 carries, but allong with CP, we can seriously wear the hell out of a defense with our running game!
Shannahan is seriously working on our o-line. I'm feeling a lot better about our team now. I mean, it's early to be optimistic, i know, but both our o-line and d-line are being adressed EARLY. Old baggage is GONE. new guys are signing PERFORMANCE based contracts that encourage improved play. All and all, i am more than happy with the Shanahans' and company's approach!

I think CP and LJ are both 'past their prime' backs, but it does't mean that the Redskins can't win with them. Not a bad gamble with both of them, but I wonder how long Portis has here. Would we really start season with Portis, Johnson? That's over 10 million in HBs...

We got him for the right base price that's for sure. Portis will play one more year of his contract and by next year we'll have a young buck ready to take over from LJ by next season's end. Great move

Re: Redskins Sign Larry Johnson

Another reason this signing makes sense is this.
Shanny knows that he cannot improve the Oline ALL IN ONE YEAR....not realistic.
The proof is in the pudding....he went out and signed an older back with ethics issues.

When has Shanny done that before?...I can't remember.

This is the guy that everyone was expecting to just use a different rookie 5th round draft choice every year to be the leading rusher...well...it looks like he has his head on straight and realizes our line sucks right now and he's going to need some Senior RBs to drag tacklers down the field for another year or two until the Oline gets corrected.

Not a huge fan of this pickup due to ethics, but from a talent level AND value perspective AND transition strategy perspective....it all makes sense to me now

Re: Redskins Sign Larry Johnson

Well I think the thing that worries me is the guy is coming home to his old high school buddies.

The old gang maybe a problem with him coming here. But this is all conjucture on my part as I do not know LJ, I do not know the area he is from, and I do not know who his old friends are.

Now if he used to be pretty docile guy around the area and his family kept him in check as a kid who knows maybe he will be better off back at home. And the fact that being a Redskin maybe enough motivation to push him to be a better player and man. Only time will tell.

Re: Redskins Sign Larry Johnson

i am satisfied with this signing. not thrilled, but as others have said, hes cheap and hasnt carried the ball as much as others his age. LJ and CP can run out their careers for us over the next couple of years, its a good stop gap while we address much more pressing issues along both lines.

I like the move, and I think in a zone blocking scheme LJ has enough vision, speed, and power to be effective. I think he's matured and hopefully he'll be an asset in '10.

Re: Redskins Sign Larry Johnson

Pretty much all that's out there right now for backs are veterans teetering around the age of 30. LJ has the least amount of mileage on him so from that perspective this move makes sense.

I don't like the off the field baggage at all, but we didn't dedicate a ton of guaranteed money towards him so the risk isn't too high.
