If someone says "to tell you the truth" to me that preps me for a lie (or else I think they are so used to lying that they need to emphasize the truthfulness of this particular statement)

I have an uncle that uses that a lot. Not that he is a liar, rather he says many things in jest, so when he is not joking around he will start with that phrase to validate its sincerity.
