Apparently, Clinton Portis really will have to fight to keep his job.

That seemed clear Friday after the Redskins signed running back Willie Parker, adding another Pro Bowl runner to a backfield that already included Portis and the recently signed Larry Johnson. Parker signed an incentive-laded one-year contract worth as much as $3.1 million, league sources said.

Portis is guaranteed $6.4 million this season, but Coach Mike Shanahan has made it clear every job on the roster is open. So with the addition of Johnson and Parker, the battle in the backfield is on.

"It's flat out an open competition," said Parker's agent, Doug Hendrickson. "That's what they told Willlie. It's a flat-out open competition as to who's going to play and who's going to start. They said that's the way it's going to be."
