Re: The Official 2010 NFL Draft Thread: Round 1
Matthews has the size, speed and burst through the hole that will translate to the next level. I watched quite a bit of Gerhart and he was excellent in the Pac-10 (saw him torch my Trojans last year), but I don't see him breaking away like he did in college. Dude's definitely a tough kid, but watching Matthews leads me to believe he's got the better upside in the L.

Re: The Official 2010 NFL Draft Thread: Round 1
There's 40 speed times and there's in-game speed with pads on and linebackers breathing down your neck. Matthews is a one-cut runner who is going to do well behind the SD o-line. Gerhart had the best o-line in the Pac-10 and had a tremendous season... but watching the two play extensively, I like Matthews better.

Also, going with college player opponents who are future high draft picks isn't a very accurate gauge of something. Most major division 1 schools have those, so everyone is going to face them... Fresno St. may be a mid-major, but it's not like Gerhart was taking on the future top picks by himself- again, he had o-linemen blocking for him at the first level. A few years back, Auburn was featuring upperclassmen who were future first round picks (Jason Campbell, Cadillac Williams, Carlos Rogers, Ronnie Brown and Karlos Dansby). Their season opener was against a team starting a first-time starter QB and two freshmen running backs. The latter team won at Auburn, 23-0. Matt Leinart, Reggie Bush and Lendale White weren't exactly veterans when they won that game. What's this mean? It doesn't really matter how things shake out in college until you get into the NFL. |
