Re: Guard watches coast for oil slick's first wave

We already knew that the only solution is going to be the relief well, but I don't see anything about them giving up until August. They're going to try another top hat.

It's amazing to me that the best minds in the world can't figure out how to fix this after so long. Ugh.

Why did the White House refuse help from 13 other countries (Canada, Mexico, South Korea, and 10 European nations) and the UN? WTF? Seems like the more assistance the better. The State Dept said we have no immediate need for assistance. Really? Could have fooled me.

I know every average Joe sitting at home seems to have a solution but I think the fact they can't get it fixed speaks to what a cluster F of a problem is really is. This isn't your kitchen sink leaking here.

As far as turning down assistance, perhaps it's a case of having two many hands in the pot may only make things worse.

Thats the first I heard of turning down assistance but I don't see how we can have too many hands in the pot with all the miles of coast line we need to protect.

It's not my kitchen, you're correct there. But if it was, I'd be pissed that the current cooks have had about six weeks with their hands in the pot and have done nothing but fail repeatedly. I don't see how some fresh sets of eyes can hurt.

Also, how on earth do Obama and Co justify not allowing more assistance in the form of beems/barriers and wildlife rescue? Can't have enough of that IMO. A cluster Fu*k indeed.

What is that old saying?

oh yeah, Pride goeth before the fall.

Hadn't heard we had refused help, but that seems ridiculous to me. The more expert eyes on the problem the better it would seem to me.

Not really related to the discussion at hand, however, what's funny is that "old saying" is actually a misquote:

Latest word from gulf shores is that there is more than a handful of "top people" suggesting to the government that a nuclear or other kind of explosive be used to fill the well, based on the fact that the russians successfully plugged runaway wells 70 years ago by using a nuclear weapon.....

I know you are listening to your inside sources, but sometimes your reflective comments remind me of the JLC - Adam Schefter debate on AH. You may be hearing valid comments, but they seem to be tainted by the local negative frustrations much like JLC's AH reports tended to be slanted to the negative.

Re: Guard watches coast for oil slick's first wave

Great article Matty. Full of WHOA and Holy Cow moments, here is one that made me shake my head:

Quote:
As NPR reported in 2007:

All the U.S. tanks, planes and ships guzzle 340,000 barrels of oil a day, making the American military the single-largest purchaser and consumer of oil in the world.

If the Defense Department were a country, it would rank about 38th in the world for oil consumption, right behind the Philippines.

As Reuters pointed out in 2008:

U.S. military fuel consumption dwarfs energy demand in many countries around the world, adding up to nearly double the fuel use in Ireland and 20 times more than that of Iceland, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

Re: Guard watches coast for oil slick's first wave

Here's a live picture of my lunch view today from the balcony at our place in southwest Florida on the gulf. This spill is really personal for me. If oil ruins these beaches for years, all the little shops and restuarants around here that rely on tourism are finito. Not to mention all the fishhermen. Property values are going to plummet as well, and that's bad news for a state like Florida that has already been crushed by the housing crisis. I have to think it's inevitable at this point. Just like what's already happening in LA.

Makes me so sick, so sad, and so angry.
