My job would be much harder if the school were to make condoms , cig's , beer available . Maybe the school is not encouraging kids to have sex , however kids even up to 17 years of age will make bad choices , and giving them a reason to feel "protected "might drive them into a bad choice . I do not have kids , but I think we should leave kids under 12-13 alone < as far as the gov't / schools > , that is the parents responsibility as far as what age to have that type of discussion and what punishment might be handed out if they make the wrong choice . My point about the gun , was if the school is protecting a child by giving them condoms , then a kid who was getting beat up every day might need protection also , and I doubt any parent would be happy if the school said " you should be happy we are handing out guns , knives ect. to the weak kids ... its for their protection" . I know the comparison is a reach , just saying that IMO both would go to far , as the condoms were being given to six yr olds , 3 yrs removed from being a baby .
Life is all about choice and personal responsibility. If you bring your children up right no one, and I mean no one, can undermine your teachings.

Saden , I agree with " personal responsibility " .... 100% . As far as undermining a parents teachings , if someone gets to your kid at an early enough age , Im not so sure . Not all kids have a great deal of confindence ,maybe they grow a little slower , are not as strong or athletic , acne ect. I do not disagree with your statement , but I have seen kids who were raised by good loving parents , give into peer pressure and mess up their lives , in some cases very badly . For what its worth , I live and let live , like most I get mad from time to time , but i just do what I need to do , enjoy life as much as possible and try and help others when I get the chance , like most Americans seem to . TGIF ..... happy hour is soon aproaching Have a great , safe weekend everyone ... oh If you see a blue corvette in your rear view mirror traveling at a high rate of speed , get out of my way , I only break for hot chicks < over 25 yrs old >. Remember .... stay out of my way , the road is all mine

I am well qualified to speak on the subject without having had children of my own. I am my father son and he has tought me how to make good decisions. I have never felt I couldn't go to him for advice and I did all the time. No matter what is advice came first.

thats great, and im glad for you. but not all kids can avoid something known as peer pressure. in reality, you can do all the right things as a parent, and once the child reaches a certain age, they will start making their own decisions. they will have pressure from all angles. some will do the right thing. others.... let me ask you this, our prisons are full. are the parents of all those prisoners bad parents?

Your father has done a good job and I'm sure is a remarkable man (but how'd you get so misguided politically ).

Anywho, both you and dmek have valid points. Unfortunately there are outside influences that as a parent you don't have control over. Often those outside influencers aren't the best. Every family situation and external environment are different, as is every person. All you can do is lay the best moral groundwork and constantly communicate with your kids (even when they're teenagers and that's the last thing they want to do). That and a good deal of prayer are the best you can do.

You can't shape the world around your children, you can only shape how they see it. That is the only control you have and should expect to have.

It's easy to say and you're exactly right, but the parental bonds always give you a feeling of wanting to do everything you can to protect your kids, even if you know it's not reasonable or feasible.

Awesome.

I would take it a step further, to say that trying to shape the world around your children is an impediment to their development into rational, critical thinkers, who are able to withstand the pressure of their peers, and society in general.
