The New Generation???

I'm 23, right out of college. I'm looking for a job that will last me from now through the time I finish my masters. (Which I'm starting next year)

At this point I will do ANYTHING. 40k... I would sell my soul for 40k. A full time job, for 40k annually sounds like a dream. I went through college and only have $2k of student loans so basically I have nothing I have to pay towards except moving out. I swear, kids my days aren't this dude. Most I know are dying to work anywhere with full time hours, a salary and a little benefits. Oh did I mention I'm uninsured too?

I've been searching for a job from before I ever put on that cap and gown (in May) till now. I've been on numerous interviews (At least 10+ since June) and nothing has materialized. A good friend of mine, graduated from MD, interned with the Redskins (as a journalist) for the past season. And couldn't get a job for over 4 months.

If you graduated last year, this year, or probably next year.. You're basically screwed.

But seriously. I am so desperate for a full-time job, I've thought about asking you guys where I should start. I'm willing to take anything that pays over 25k. Ideally, I'd like to start around 30k. Anything having to do with law or social work type things I'm down for.

I'm looked for government jobs but they want people with office/clerical experience, which I have none of. I only have 4 years of customer service experience. Damn... I guess I am screwed.

Ever go to Manpower?

They are temp jobs but the usually in the DC area theyend up being permanent jobs.

Man, I wish I knew about this site back when I was unemployed for 6 months. I've been working at a Mazda dealership as a car salesman for about a month now, and I was fortunate to get this job given my driving record. I don't understand that kid's line of thinking at all, and the fact that his parents are paying an extra 2k a month for his apartment is even more ridiculous. Not a single one of my friends are like that guy. 40k a year? I've never made more than 22k in a year, and granted I've taken the work now/put off college till later path, but gd. You can't be picky when so few opportunities are available.

On the surface I think this kid is making a mistake, but there may be more to it than meets the eye. I had an interesting path to and through college. Out of high school I worked a job for about 10/hr, it was hot as hell, and sucked. While going there I was going to a local community college. Finally I went off to Mason full time. To making money during the summer/weekends I woke up at 2-3AM to deliver bread. It was hard and dirty work that basically ruined most of my weekends.

When I graduated college, I had one major criteria. I wanted to work during the day and have most weekends off. I turned down a job because it was working at night and got Tues/Thurs off. I ended up taking a day shift with the same schedule. Two months later I left for another job that had worse hours 1-10PM, less money, but more interesting work and security clearance. More importantly, weekends off.

Fact is, when you get your foot in the door and prove yourself as capable you can go a long way. In that first year I got 4 promotions. When my boss left to go to another company he brought me with him and in a little over a year my salary has almost doubled since when I started. It requires a combination of things to make a career work.

If he really feels there's no mobility or hates the company, I understand it. It's important not to hate your job or what you do -- if you can afford it. Sometimes you have to bite the bullet. I took whatever job I could find because I needed money, but if I had a little freedom, I probably would have kept looking. It wasn't that I thought I was too good for the job, I just knew it wasn't a good fit for me and there wasn't anywhere to go within the company.
