But remember these contractors employ people and pay them very well to go over to such a hostile environment to build communications networks and support weapons systems. My company lost one of our very solid local employees to a contractor in Iraq (he got a 40% or so pay increase). The defense contractors need to employ people to make the toys and those are generally good paying jobs. The contractors employed locally at the bases do a lot more than clean up the base. They often run IT systems or support DoD projects/programs that are specific to each local base. Those jobs also normally pay well and those people spend money in the local economy. So as much as you want to bash defense spending and defense contractors for everything, that simply isn't the case.
