Exclamation The Story Behind Cell Phone Radiation Research

Link to the Slashdot discussion of this article

"A study by Lai and Singh, published in a 1995 issue of Bioelectromagnetics, found an increase in damaged DNA in the brain cells of rats after a single two-hour exposure to microwave radiation at levels considered "safe" by government standards. The idea behind that study was relatively simple: expose rats to microwave radiation similar to that emitted by cell phones, then examine their brain cells to see if any DNA damage resulted. The news was apparently unwelcome in some quarters. According to internal documents that later came to light, Motorola started working behind the scenes to minimize any damage Lai's research might cause even before the study was released. In a memo and a draft position paper dated Dec. 13, 1994, officials talked about how they had "war-gamed the Lai-Singh issue"; and were in the process of lining up experts who would be willing to point out weaknesses in Lai's study and reassure the public. To this day, the cell phone industry continues to dispute Lai and Singh's findings although half of about 200 studies say there is a biological effect from cell phone radiation. Read more in UW Columns."

Re: The Story Behind Cell Phone Radiation Research

just thought this was interested... I know a couple guys that have gotten brain tumors that were extensive cell phone users (though i doubt there's a direct correlation, maybe something like this was a mitigating factor?)

anyways, it seems that the community is fairly divided on this research...

Well, of course, that would explain it - The stupid/asshole gene makes these folks more susceptible to radiation during periods of high stupidity.

It all fits together.

Re: The Story Behind Cell Phone Radiation Research

The whole study seems like nonsense to me. I mean, what is a lab rat going to talk about on the phone? And who's he calling?

I hate cell phones for many reasons. All these idiot people with their cell phones that talk on them in public places such as the check-out line of the grocery store, at traffic lights, at sporting events (who the f*** brings a cell phone to a football or basketball game?), need to be pushed off a bridge.

Everything has its costs and if cancer risks are markedly higher for using cell phones then this is the natural laws of the universe taking over.

Re: The Story Behind Cell Phone Radiation Research

Speaking of cell phones at a game, MLB 2k5 at one point in the game has the PA announcer saying "Anyone caught talking on a cell phone on camera and waving like an idiot will be subject to ejection and arrest..." or something along those lines. Its usually backround noise, but if you tune in the PA announcer you'll hear it at some point. Laughed my ass off when I first noticed it.

Sorry for the delayed response, I was on the phone to some lab rats I know. They need to get the hell out of there.

That is how I paid to get to the game and that is why I have the phone...
