He's strictly year to year at this point, but he's going to earn his way back based on his play from earlier in this season.

I think so too. Shanahan seems to think he's got quite a bit left from his comments today. If he's healthy and agrees to a deal that makes sense, I definitely think he will be back.

With his base salary of almost $7.2 million and bonuses, Portis will be paid almost $7.7 million this season. Although it is possible Portis's career with the Redskins and in the NFL could be finished, Shanahan said he believes Portis could have productive years ahead of him.


"I don't think there's any question about it," Shanahan said. "He's got such a strong will. It all depends on does he come back a hundred percent? Does he want to come back and play? He's got that inner drive that most people don't have. He wants to compete. But obviously, he's got to get well."
