As far as the number change affecting jersey purchases, IMO the only jerseys worth buying are the classics. A good old #44, #7 or #9 can be worn for 20 years without a problem. I know some people prefer to wear a current player, that's just my take on it. I don't wear them much anymore but the last one I brought a few years ago was #44.
