Here saved you the trouble

http://www.thewarpath.net/parking-lo...-storms-2.html

Heres a funny story from a customer who had a wreck on black ice. He slid into a ditch going about five miles an hour because he just could not stop and the road was just slick ice. A cop pulled up and was writing him a ticket for driving to fast for the conditions. My customer tried to tell the officer that he was only going about 5 MPH but the officer would not listen. Then another officer was pulling up to see what was going on and slid into the ditch right beside my customers car. My customer looked at the officer writing the ticked and asked if he was going to write the other officer the same ticket. He said they both kind of laughed and he tore up the ticket.

People don't know how to drive in it regardless of where they are, believe me. People think they know around here, but they don't.

In the summer you guys will be telling me that a 90 degree day isn't hot, so what comes around goes around.

MD is definitely warmer on average, about 5 degrees. Plus the humidity is worse down your way.

not to bust on anybody that drives them, but i always see the ricer cars and suv's that are either in the ditch, or involved in the accidents around here. Maybe too much speed??

Us good ole boys in the pickup trucks, most of them time escape unscathed. But keep in mind even in 4X4, i only go about 20 to 25 mph when its snowing, and even slower when it's like 6 inches or so, so i guess speed has alot to do with it.

Speed is always a factor.

4 wheel drive and all wheel drive help you get going, but they don't help you stop and steer any better.

Also, ABS makes your stops longer. Give yourself plenty of room to stop. Chances are, you won't stop nearly as quickly as you believe you will.

The people you see in the ditch are the ones who don't understand this. Well, they may now.

Actually you can use power to the wheels to help you steer better but most people panic and hit the brakes.

Not really. No traction is no traction whether you're stopping or accelerating. Most vehicles have open differentials these days, and if you try to accelerate too much, you run the risk of generating torque steer, which is unpredictable and dangerous in the slick stuff.

Yeah people definitely panic and lock up the brakes only to lose control. Gotta tap on the brakes and steer yourself outta trouble.

Yep, the key is to be smooth. Ease into the brakes, accelerator, and steering. It's a good practice no matter the driving conditions.

I have no idea where Stephens City is at but if it's anywhere near NoVa I will be glad as hell I'm leaving town today. F the snow, especially when it's too cold for the salt and chemicals to melt it on the road.

Edit: According to google you're about 1 1/2 hours from Woodbridge, but you're still pretty close to NoVa compared to the rest of the state. Like I said I'll def. be glad I'm gonna be out of town if the snow comes my way.

Re: First major snow storm of 2010-2011 Winter today

I just thought I'd update everyone that during that first snow, I left work about 3 hours early and got home at the SAME TIME I always do because the roads around my office were trash. I work about 3 mins off the beltway and it took me over and hour to get on there. There were a bunch of 18 wheelers at the traffic light to turn onto 7100 and it was horrendous. The beltway was pretty much fine, but everyone was going slow, all in all it took me 2 hours and 45 minutes to navigate what's normally under an hour trip.
