It is because of deleted posts. Once there are enough deleted posts to to take you to the "last page" where that post exists the "last page" isn't actually there anymore because the deleted posts have shrunk the thread. It has to calculate that "last page" based on your display settings for # of replies per page so it is a dynamic thing that can't be helped. It likely only happens in bigger threads.

Yeah you can reset counters on threads to help with that.. but there are definitely still quirks regardless.. like it not saving last viewed post properly.. so oftentimes if you click that link it'll take you to the end of the thread rather than where you left off

I can't remember if there's an option to save that in the db vs cookies or whatever
