Eh, she's not the first one to mess it up. Shit happens, it's not like she did it on purpose. People take this shit so personally like she went out took a dump on the flag, even my Mom was all fired up about it. I'm like give her a break she made a mistake, jeez.

As for Whitney, kinda hard to mess it up when you're lip syncing. At least Christina was really singing.

Preach.

Skinsguy, that's pretty cool that you sang the anthem at ball games

I hate, hate, hate when Orioles fans (it's mainly O's fans that do this) yell out Oh!! at "O, say can you see"

I'm not a fan of messing around with the tune of the song, but it is kind of funny though how this cherished anthem's tune is based on a drinking song.

I went to the GU vs. PC men's b-ball game (this past Saturday) and one guy behind me yelled "O" but like no one else did it. After the song a few people around us told him that was disrespectful. He was all apologetic. I kind of felt bad for him becaue he probaly assumed a few others would do it but I guess the Nat's have converted O's fans in DC. It was literally like farting at a quiet moment in church that is how awkward it was for this guy.

Don't sing the national anthem at sporting events...problem solved. BTW, why do they sing the national anthem at these big gatherings?

Its so we can remember our freedom to gather for events like the SB. They also sing it at small gatherings.

How about you take a moment at the beginning of your office meetings to sing the national anthem? Do the pledge of allegiance too while you're at it.

Personally, I don't need the anthem to remind me of the freedom afforded to me by our Constitution. To each his own I suppose.

mental_floss Blog » Why do we sing the National Anthem at sporting events?

"After America’s entrance into World War I, Major League Baseball games often featured patriotic rituals, such as players marching in formation during pregame military drills and bands playing patriotic songs. During the seventh-inning stretch of game one of the 1918 World Series, the band erupted into “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The Cubs and Red Sox players faced the centerfield flag pole and stood at attention. The crowd, already on their feet, began to sing along and applauded at the end of the song.

Given the positive reaction, the band played the song during the next two games, and when the Series moved to Boston, the Red Sox owner brought in a band and had the song played before the start of each remaining contest. After the war (and after the song was made the national anthem by a congressional resolution in 1931), the song continued to be played, but only on special occasions like opening day, national holidays and World Series games.

During World War II, baseball games again became venues for large-scale displays of patriotism, and technological advances in public address systems allowed songs to be played without a band. “The Star-Spangled Banner” was played before games throughout the course of the war, and by the time the war was over, the pregame singing of the national anthem had become cemented as a baseball ritual, after which it spread to other sports.

So it went from being spontaneous to special occasions to everyday at every event? It's usage has been cheapened to serve the needs of owners to elicit emotional reaction of the crowd. Great.

Why do you hate America?

You probably hate the troops too.

I really don't care that she made a mistake its the total butchering of the anthem that sucked. Just sing the song.

Without multiplying the number of syllables in every word by 4.

The WAY she sang the Anthem was disrespectful, just as much as not knowing the words. It's meant to be sung the way it was written, not mutilated into a pop song to bring attention on yourself. It's a reverent song, not meant for entertainment.

Sing it properly and if you have to sing it publicly, MEMORIZE THE WORDS. She has been singing it since she was a kid in the Mickey Mouse Club and it a professional singer (even though she's a horrible one). There are no excuses for her botching the words.

So what should we do with her? Kill her, kick her out of the country, etc...? What would be good.

We are humans and we make mistakes, honestly IMO this is a little one, just move on.

You know surgeons and doctors make mistakes as well that end up killing folks. I would worry more about those mistakes then CA's singing error.
