Re: ESPN Say's Newton To Enter Draft
Bah!
I'm not suggesting we take Christian Ponder at no. 10. I'm saying it makes sense under the "epic success or bust" philosophy at quarterback because 1) Gabbert will be gone by 10, and 2) There aren't a lot of true believers in Locker/Newton/Mallett as elite players. I think people believe in them as potential starters in a weak class. As for me, I'm not a buyer in the "you need an epic quarterback to compete" philosophy. Teams need to do a lot of things well to compete, that happens to just be one of the few that isn't below everyone's radar. But competent quarterbacks are absolutely everywhere, and that doesn't fit with the narrative about "winners" and such. Competent quarterbacks can appear to be either winners or losers. Just that the "losers" can be acquired much, much cheaper.

Hey Smoot this is off topic but I was wondering when will B-Mitch reply to our questions?
Thanks

Re: ESPN Say's Newton To Enter Draft
Yeah well I tell you what if them TCU fellars done be in the SEC they done would have been like negative 18 and twelve. SEC done be the best conference from top to bottom. Vanderbilt would win the PAC 10 with ease never mind TCU's cute little wanna be college conference. Yes sire I tell you what.

![]() But admit it, if TCU was in the SEC, they certainly wouldn't have 12-0/11-1 type records the past few years. 10-2/9-3 is definitely possible, but not this undefeated stuff.

As for Dalton, I just can't jump on board yet. He's a spread QB (which I don't necessarily hold against any QB to much) that doesn't have great physical tools. I don't know about his football IQ either as I can't find a scout thats been able to talk about it in detail. What I see when I look at Dalton is a mid round spread QB with average physical tools all the while knowing little if anything about his football IQ. And even though I respect TCU for going out looking for tough games only to be turned down time and time again (allegedly a handful of SEC teams along with numerous others turned down frequent request to have TCU travel to play them) the fact is the only teams they did end up playing weren't to impressive until they beat Wisconsin. Wouldn't mind acquiring a guy like him as an insurance policy "QB of the future" with a more touted prospect on board (a la a Gus Ferrote to compliment a Heath Schuler) but I just can't trust the franchises future at its most important position with what I see as an average prospect being the best option (even the Falcons had Michael Vick when they drafted Matt Schuab). As of now the only Mid round QB I have any confidence in is Ponder and even he makes me nervous. And you're right I have spent to much time in the South.

Andy Dalton looks like a good overall guy and QB. He has the tools minus the off the field question marks. His work ethic is pretty strong. The work ethic is why I am down on taking a chance with Cam. Plus, like JC, Cam had one hell of a team behind him in a rather weak year for the SEC. Other than really Bama and Auburn, with LSU tagging behind, the SEC wasn't as strong as usual. |
